Who EVOTECH is looking for in the Heights

Heights work rewards a careful installer and punishes a fast one. If you like old houses, own a patch kit, and have never once told a homeowner that is just how it came out, this ZIP will suit you.

We contract independent television installers to cover 77008, which spans the Houston Heights historic districts, Woodland Terrace, Timbergrove Manor, Lazybrook and Shady Acres. The role is residential mounting and cable concealment, with regular crossover into soundbar wiring, media-panel cleanup, and small camera or access-point additions for customers who ask while you are already standing in the room.

Backgrounds that work well here

  • Trim carpenters and finish-out hands who already respect plaster, millwork and hardwood floors.
  • Low-voltage technicians out of alarm, satellite, structured wiring or home-theatre trades.
  • Remodel subcontractors who have opened enough century-old walls to know what waits inside them.
  • Anyone who can show, rather than claim, that their brackets come out level and their cable never shows.

You will work unaccompanied in homes whose owners have spent years and real money restoring original detail. Presentation counts: clean vehicle, shoe covers on, drop cloths down before tools come out, and a room that looks untouched everywhere except where the screen now hangs.

Why a 1920s Heights bungalow is a different job

The bungalow stock through the historic districts runs roughly from the 1910s into the 1930s, and very little about it behaves like modern construction. An installer whose experience stops at post-2000 houses is going to be surprised here, so it is worth naming the surprises in advance.

Shiplap behind the sheetrock

Many of these homes were built with horizontal shiplap sheathing on the inside face of the studs and later covered with drywall during a remodel. The result is a cavity that a glow rod simply cannot travel through. You discover it six inches into a fish, and the right response is to stop, explain to the homeowner what the wall is made of, and offer surface raceway or an alternative route rather than enlarging the opening until something gives.

Lath, plaster and irregular framing

Where original plaster over wood lath survives, ordinary stud sensors return noise and nothing useful. Working up from the baseboard, from the back of a closet, or off a known corner and measuring the framing rhythm beats guessing every time. Spacing in houses of this age is not dependably sixteen inches on centre, and it sometimes changes mid-wall where an addition was tied in decades later.

Pier-and-beam and the crawl space

Most of these houses sit on pier-and-beam foundations, which is genuinely good news for an installer: a crawl-space route is often the cleanest way to carry power and signal across a room without ever touching the plaster. It also means coveralls, a headlamp, standing water after a hard Houston rain, and honest awareness of what else may be living under a hundred-year-old house.

Historic district reality

Large parts of this ZIP sit inside designated historic districts where exterior alterations are regulated. In practical terms, a penetration through an original exterior wall, a visible run of exterior conduit, or a bracket on the front elevation is not a judgement call an installer makes in the moment. Route it internally, and if the only honest solution is external, ring dispatch before the drill comes out.

Shady Acres and Timbergrove: the new-build half of 77008

The northern and western edge of this ZIP is a completely different animal. Shady Acres and the blocks toward Ella and West 20th have been rebuilt heavily with three-storey new-construction homes, while Timbergrove and Lazybrook hold mid-century ranch and split-level stock with attics you can genuinely work in.

On the new builds you get predictable framing, clean cavities and occasionally pre-run conduit where the builder was thoughtful. In exchange you get tall entry walls, stairwell mounts that demand a proper ladder stand-off, and owners who expect an utterly invisible installation because the house is brand new. On the mid-century homes the attic is usually the route, and a Houston attic in July is a safety question rather than an inconvenience, which is why we place attic-heavy assignments early in the day.

Being able to move between those three building types inside a single week is the single most valuable thing an installer can bring to this part of town.

Gear checklist and the standards we hold you to

Materials ride on the ticket. Mounts, in-wall rated cable, recessed power kits, wall plates and raceway are supplied by EVOTECH so the customer receives a single itemised quote and you are never buying parts on your own card.

Your kitWhy it matters in this ZIP
A full patch and texture setupRepairs to old plaster and early drywall are part of the craft here, not an exception to it.
Glow rods plus a flexible bitFishing past shiplap and blocking often requires drilling a plate you cannot see.
Coveralls and a headlampCrawl-space routing beneath pier-and-beam homes is routine work.
Ladder stand-off and stabiliserProtects original trim, and reaches the tall entry walls in the newer builds.
Deep-scan stud finder and fine pilot bitPlaster over lath defeats consumer-grade sensors completely.
A camera-ready phoneEvery assignment closes with photographs of the mount, the cable path and the finished room.

Three standards are not open to negotiation on our work: the bracket is fastened into structure, any cable inside a wall is in-wall rated, and the customer confirms screen height before the first hole. A situation that cannot satisfy all three earns a call to dispatch, never a workaround.

Verification, compensation and getting on the schedule

EVOTECH IT LLC is a licensed and insured low-voltage contractor with more than twenty years in this market and a 5.0-star rating, covering Katy, Houston, Sugar Land, Richmond, Fulshear, Cypress and neighbouring Texas communities. Installers who begin in the Heights are frequently routed across that wider footprint once we know their work.

Before a first assignment we confirm identity and right to work, verify current general liability coverage for subcontract installers, review driving history for anyone using a personal vehicle on our tickets, and complete a background check appropriate to unaccompanied access to occupied homes. None of that is unusual in this trade, and all of it exists to protect the homeowner who opened the door.

Compensation is a conversation rather than a posted figure. It tracks the scope you will be running, whether a ticket is single or two-person, and the experience you actually demonstrate during the assessment. We will talk about it openly in the interview, and we are not going to publish a number on a web page that might not match your situation.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need experience with plaster and lath before applying?
It helps enormously, but it is not a hard gate. What matters is whether you slow down when a wall behaves unexpectedly instead of pushing through it. If you have never worked plaster, tell us, and your first assignments will be weighted toward the newer construction on the north side of the ZIP while you build the skill alongside someone who has it.
Is crawl-space work required?
For a lot of the pier-and-beam housing here it is the cleanest available route, so yes, expect it regularly. If you are physically unable to work in a crawl space, say so at the phone screen rather than at the doorstep, and we will weight your routing toward slab-built and newer properties instead.
What does a working assessment involve?
You run a real scheduled appointment with one of our experienced people present. We watch how you survey the wall, how you talk to the homeowner, how you handle a surprise, and what the room looks like when you leave. It is a working day, not a test in a warehouse.
Can I take work in other parts of Houston as well?
Yes. Our coverage reaches well beyond the Loop, and most installers end up running a mix. Tell us the drive time you are willing to accept in each direction and we will route inside it rather than sending you somewhere you will resent.
Do you supply the mounts and materials?
We do. Brackets, in-wall rated cable, recessed power kits, plates and raceway are pulled for each assignment, because the customer receives one itemised quote from us and an installer should never be floating material costs. You supply tools, ladders and transport.
