Professional security camera installation, done right the first time

A security camera system is only as good as the way it’s installed. EVOTECH IT LLC designs, installs and configures complete video surveillance systems for homes and businesses across the Katy and Houston area — from a four-camera package that covers a driveway and back doors, to a 32-camera commercial system that ties every entrance, aisle and loading dock into one recorder you can watch from your phone.

We are a licensed and insured low-voltage contractor with more than 20 years of hands-on experience and a 5.0-star customer rating. That matters because most “bad camera system” complaints are not about the cameras — they’re about installation: cameras aimed at the sky, cheap cable that fails in the Texas heat, night footage so grainy you can’t identify anyone, or a recorder nobody can log into six months later. We install so those problems never happen, and we walk you through the whole system before we leave.

Short answer: for most Katy/Houston properties we recommend a wired Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) system with 4MP or 8MP cameras, a network video recorder (NVR) with 2–4 weeks of storage, and a phone app for remote viewing. It’s the most reliable, highest-quality setup and it isn’t dependent on Wi-Fi or a monthly cloud bill.

Below is a straight, no-jargon guide to how these systems actually work, the choices that affect your footage quality and your budget, and exactly what our installation includes — so you can make a confident decision whether you hire us or not.

Types of security cameras we install (and when each one makes sense)

There is no single “best” security camera — there’s a best camera for a specific spot on your property. Choosing correctly is most of what separates a system that works from one that frustrates you. Here are the camera types we install most often and where each one earns its place.

Dome cameras

The classic ceiling-mounted half-sphere. The tinted dome hides which way the lens is pointing, so they’re hard to defeat, and they’re vandal-resistant. Ideal for retail floors, offices, lobbies, porches and covered patios where you want broad, discreet coverage.

Bullet cameras

The long, visible cylinder. They are an obvious deterrent — people can see they’re being watched — and the shape supports longer-range lenses, so they’re excellent for driveways, parking lots, fence lines and property perimeters. In Texas sun, the built-in sun shade also helps reduce glare.

Turret (“eyeball”) cameras

Our most-recommended all-rounder for homes. They give you the vandal resistance of a dome without the dome cover that can cause infrared glare at night, so night footage is noticeably cleaner. Great for eaves, soffits and entry points.

PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras

Motorized cameras that can rotate and zoom, either on a schedule, on a motion trigger, or under manual control. One well-placed PTZ can cover a large yard, lot or warehouse. They cost more and each PTZ only looks one direction at a time, so we typically pair them with fixed cameras rather than relying on them alone.

License-plate (LPR) cameras

Purpose-built cameras with the right lens, shutter and infrared to actually capture a readable plate on a moving vehicle — something a normal camera pointed at a driveway almost never does. Worth it for gated entrances, businesses tracking deliveries, and HOAs. We cover these in depth on our gate & license-plate camera page.

Floodlight & active-deterrent cameras

Cameras with a built-in floodlight and, on some models, a siren and two-way audio that can trigger when someone crosses a line you draw. These stop a lot of trouble before it starts. See floodlight camera installation.

Video doorbells

The single most-used camera in most homes — you answer the door from your phone whether you’re upstairs or out of town. We hardwire them for reliability and tie them into the same system as the rest of your cameras. See video doorbell installation.

Resolution, night vision and image quality — what actually matters

Camera marketing loves big numbers, but the details that decide whether you can identify a face or a plate are more specific than “4K.” Here’s what to look at.

Resolution (megapixels)

More megapixels means you can zoom into recorded footage and still see detail. But higher resolution also uses more storage and needs more light to look good. For most properties, 4MP is the value sweet spot and 8MP (4K) is worth it for wide areas, entrances and anywhere you need to read faces or plates.

ResolutionGood forTrade-off
2MP (1080p)Tight indoor spaces, hallways, secondary anglesLimited zoom-in detail
4MPMost home & small-business coverage — best valueSlightly more storage
8MP (4K)Driveways, entrances, parking lots, plate/face IDHighest storage & bandwidth

Night vision: infrared vs. color

Most cameras switch to black-and-white infrared (IR) at night, which is reliable but drops color. Newer “full-color night vision” cameras use a larger sensor and a warm spotlight to keep color after dark — very useful for identifying clothing and vehicles. We match the night-vision type to each location: IR for long, dark perimeters; color night vision near entries and driveways where detail matters most.

Wide dynamic range (WDR)

WDR is what lets a camera handle a bright doorway against a dark interior, or a sunlit driveway, without blowing out to white or crushing to black. In Houston’s harsh sun it’s not optional for outdoor cameras — we spec true WDR on every exterior position.

Lens angle

A wide lens sees more but makes distant objects small; a narrower lens sees less but reaches farther with more detail. We choose the lens per camera based on exactly what you need to see at that spot — a mistake here is the #1 reason DIY systems disappoint.

Wired (PoE) vs. wireless vs. cloud cameras

This is the decision that most affects reliability. Here’s the honest comparison we give every customer.

Wired PoE + NVRWi-Fi / wirelessCloud subscription
ReliabilityHighest — one cable for power + dataDepends on Wi-Fi signalDepends on internet uptime
Video qualityFull, consistentCan compress/drop framesOften capped to save bandwidth
StorageLocal NVR, you own itLocal or cloudMonthly fee, ongoing
Ongoing costNoneUsually noneRecurring per camera
Best forMost homes & all businessesRentals, spots with no cable pathSingle-camera, quick needs

Our default recommendation is wired PoE with a local NVR. One Cat6 cable carries both power and video to each camera, there’s no Wi-Fi congestion, footage records locally with no monthly bill, and you still get full remote viewing on your phone. We install wireless where a cable genuinely can’t be run — a detached structure, a historic wall, a rental — and we’re upfront about the trade-offs when we do. See our dedicated PoE camera installation and NVR & storage pages for the deeper technical detail.

What a professional EVOTECH installation includes

“Installation” should mean a complete, tuned, documented system — not just cameras screwed to a wall. Every EVOTECH security camera project includes:

  • On-site survey & design. We walk your property, identify the angles that actually matter (entries, driveways, blind spots, points of sale), and lay out camera positions and cable paths before we quote — so nothing is a surprise.
  • Clean, concealed cabling. We run proper outdoor-rated and in-wall-rated cable, fished through walls and attics and concealed wherever possible. No staple-gunned wire across your brick.
  • Professional mounting & aiming. Each camera is mounted solidly and aimed precisely, then reviewed on the live feed and adjusted until the shot is right.
  • Recorder setup & storage sizing. We install and configure your NVR/DVR, calculate the storage you need for your target retention (typically 2–4 weeks), and set recording schedules and motion zones.
  • Remote viewing on every device. We set up the phone and computer apps for you, test them on your actual devices, and make sure alerts land where you want them.
  • Tuning & walkthrough. We dial in night vision, motion sensitivity and smart detection to cut false alerts, then hand you a labeled system and show you how to review, export and share footage.

Our installation process, step by step

  1. Free on-site estimate. We visit, listen to your concerns, survey the property and give you a clear written scope and quote. No pressure and no invented numbers.
  2. System design. We finalize camera count, types, resolutions and recorder, and confirm storage retention with you.
  3. Cabling & rough-in. We run and conceal all cable and mount bases, coordinating around your schedule and, for businesses, your operating hours.
  4. Install & configure. Cameras go up, the recorder goes in, everything is aimed, focused and connected to your network.
  5. Test, tune & train. We verify every camera day and night, set up remote access, and walk you through the whole system.
  6. Support. We’re local — if something needs adjusting later, we’re a call away at (832) 359-2425.

How footage is stored: NVR, DVR, retention and backups

Cameras capture; the recorder keeps. How long you can look back — your retention — depends on the recorder’s hard-drive capacity, how many cameras you have, their resolution, and whether they record continuously or only on motion.

For most homes we size the recorder for 2–4 weeks of footage; many businesses want 30–90 days for liability and HR reasons, which simply means a larger drive or an array. We’ll calculate the exact capacity for your camera mix so you get the retention you want without overpaying for storage you don’t. Recording on motion and person/vehicle events (rather than 24/7 on every camera) can multiply how far back you can look. For critical sites we can add a second drive or off-site backup so a stolen recorder doesn’t take the evidence with it.

Remote viewing, smart detection and fewer false alarms

A modern system should tell you about the things that matter and stay quiet about the things that don’t. We configure:

  • Phone & tablet apps for live view and instant playback from anywhere, plus computer access for businesses.
  • Person & vehicle detection so you get alerted to a person at the door — not to every cat, shadow and rainstorm. This one setting is the difference between an app you check and an app you mute.
  • Custom motion zones & tripwires — draw the exact areas and lines that trigger recording or alerts (the walkway, the gate, the register) and ignore the busy street.
  • Two-way audio & deterrents on capable cameras, so you can speak to a visitor or trigger a light/siren remotely.

Built for Katy & Houston homes and businesses

We install throughout Katy, Houston, Sugar Land, Richmond, Fulshear, Cypress and the surrounding communities, and we design for local conditions. Texas heat and UV are hard on cheap equipment and cabling, so we use outdoor-rated cameras and cable and mount recorders where they stay cool. Gulf-coast storms mean we pay attention to surge protection and weather sealing on every exterior run. For businesses, we work around your hours and, where required, coordinate with property management or code requirements. Being local also means service is a short drive away — not a support ticket to another state.

Residential vs. commercial: different jobs, different design

A home system and a business system share the same technology but solve different problems, and designing them the same way is a common mistake.

Homes

The priorities are usually the front door and packages, the driveway and vehicles, the yard and fence line, and any blind approach to the house. Discretion, clean cabling that respects your home’s appearance, easy phone access for the whole family, and reliable night footage matter most. A four-to-eight-camera wired system with a video doorbell covers the vast majority of homes beautifully.

Businesses

Commercial systems add points of sale, entrances and exits, stockrooms, loading docks, cash-handling areas and parking. Retention is longer (30–90 days is common for liability, shrinkage and HR disputes), user access may need to be role-based, and cameras often need to integrate with access control and alarm systems. We design commercial coverage to hold up as evidence — readable faces at entries, readable plates at the lot, and no gaps at the register — and we install around your operating hours so we don’t disrupt business.

Five mistakes that ruin a camera system (and how we avoid them)

Almost every disappointing camera system fails for one of these reasons. Knowing them helps you judge any installer — including us.

  1. Wrong lens for the distance. A wide lens on a long driveway turns a person into a few unusable pixels. We pick the lens per camera for exactly what you need to see at that spot.
  2. Aiming into the sun or a light. A camera pointed toward a sunrise, a floodlight or a headlight path will be blinded at the worst moment. We plan angles around the light, and spec true WDR.
  3. Undersized storage. Buying eight 4K cameras and a recorder that only holds three days of footage defeats the point. We calculate retention up front so you can actually look back when it counts.
  4. Cheap cable and no surge protection. In Texas heat and storms, bargain cable and unprotected runs fail within a season or two. We use rated cable and protect every exterior run.
  5. No tuning and no walkthrough. Cameras left on factory defaults flood you with false alerts until you stop looking. We tune motion, night vision and smart detection, then teach you the system.

What affects the cost of a security camera system

Every property is different, so we give real quotes after a free on-site look rather than a fake “starting at” number. The honest drivers of cost are:

  • Number of cameras and how much of the property you want covered.
  • Resolution & camera type — 4K, PTZ and license-plate cameras cost more than standard fixed cameras.
  • Cable runs — long or difficult runs (two-story, brick, detached buildings) take more labor and materials.
  • Recorder & storage — more cameras, higher resolution and longer retention mean a larger recorder and drives.
  • Extras — active deterrents, license-plate capture, and off-site backup add capability and cost.

Our estimate is itemized so you can see exactly what each part costs and adjust the scope to your budget. The on-site estimate fee, when one applies, is credited toward your project. To get real numbers for your property, request a free on-site estimate or call (832) 359-2425.

Frequently asked questions

How many security cameras do I need?
Most homes are well covered by 4–8 cameras: every exterior door, the driveway/garage, and the main yard approaches. Larger homes and businesses need more to eliminate blind spots. We map the exact angles during the free on-site survey so you buy the right number — not the biggest package.
Are wired or wireless cameras better?
For reliability and image quality, wired PoE cameras with a local recorder win for almost every property. Wireless is the right call only where a cable genuinely can’t be run — a detached building, a rental, or a historic wall. We install both and tell you honestly which fits each spot.
Can I watch my cameras on my phone?
Yes. We set up secure phone, tablet and computer apps so you can view live and recorded footage from anywhere, and we test them on your own devices before we leave.
How long is footage kept?
That’s your choice, set by the recorder’s storage. We typically size home systems for 2–4 weeks and business systems for 30–90 days. Recording on motion and person/vehicle events stretches retention further.
Do the cameras work at night?
Yes. Every camera we install has night vision — infrared for long, dark perimeters and full-color night vision near entries and driveways where you need to identify clothing and vehicles.
Will the cameras hold up in Texas heat and storms?
We use outdoor-rated cameras and cabling, add surge protection, and seal every exterior connection. Cutting corners here is why cheap systems fail after a summer or two; we build for the Gulf-coast climate.
Can you capture license plates?
A normal camera pointed at a driveway rarely gets a readable plate on a moving car. We install purpose-built license-plate cameras with the correct lens and shutter where plate capture matters — details on our gate & license-plate camera page.
Do I have to pay a monthly fee?
No. Our standard systems record to a local recorder you own, with no subscription. Cloud storage is available if you specifically want it, but it isn’t required to view your cameras remotely.
Can you add cameras to my existing system?
Often yes — if your current recorder and cabling are in good shape we can expand it. If the existing gear is failing or incompatible, we’ll show you the trade-offs before recommending a replacement.
How long does installation take?
A typical home system is completed in a day; larger homes and commercial systems take longer depending on camera count and cable runs. We’ll give you a realistic timeline with your quote.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes — EVOTECH IT LLC is a licensed and insured low-voltage contractor with 20+ years of experience and a 5.0-star rating. That protects you and your property during the work.
What areas do you serve?
Katy, Houston, Sugar Land, Richmond, Fulshear, Cypress and the surrounding communities. Call (832) 359-2425 to confirm your address.
Can the system help me see who’s at the door?
Yes — we install and integrate hardwired video doorbells so you can see and speak to visitors from your phone, tied into the same system as the rest of your cameras.
What happens if something isn’t working later?
We’re local. Call us and we’ll help — remotely if we can, on-site if we need to. Long-term support is part of why customers choose a local installer over a box from a big-box store.
