Key Fob Entry Systems for Memorial-Area Estates, Townhome Enclaves and Offices
In the Memorial area, a fob system is often more about people than doors: the housekeeper who comes three mornings a week, the landscaping crew on Tuesdays, the pool technician, the contractor finishing a remodel, the neighbor feeding the dog. EVOTECH designs fob entry for estate homes in the Villages, townhome enclaves along Memorial Drive, and offices and clinics near Memorial City, so each person gets exactly the access they need, for exactly as long as they need it.
Memorial is several places at once
The Memorial area runs west from the Loop along Buffalo Bayou and Memorial Drive toward the Energy Corridor, and its properties fall into distinct groups, each needing a different kind of fob system:
- The Villages. Hunters Creek, Piney Point, Bunker Hill, Hedwig, Hilshire and Spring Valley are separate small cities. Many original mid-century ranch homes on wooded lots have given way to large custom houses, often with a driveway gate, a pedestrian gate and a detached garage or guest quarters.
- Memorial neighborhoods inside Houston’s city limits, with a similar blend of older houses and new construction.
- Townhome enclaves and mid-rise condominiums along Memorial Drive, Woodway and nearby streets, usually with one shared vehicle gate and a board that decides.
- Commercial campuses around Memorial City and CityCentre, with medical offices, professional suites and apartments.
From our Katy base the Memorial area is a straight run east along I-10; call to confirm a visit time for your address.
Designing access around the people who come and go
The most valuable thing a fob does in a large household is give each regular visitor a credential of their own. A shared fob or shared gate code cannot be revoked for one person, and its log tells you nothing. We plan the user list before any hardware:
| Person | Typical window | Openings | Access ends |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family members | Any time | All | Only when the owner changes it |
| Housekeeper or nanny | Weekday hours | Gate and service entrance | When employment ends |
| Landscaping crew | One morning a week | Vehicle gate and side yard gate | When the contract ends |
| Pool or pest service | Scheduled visit window | Pedestrian gate to the yard | When the contract ends |
| Remodeling contractor | Work hours for the project | Gate plus garage or side door | On a preset expiry date |
Every fob is enrolled to a name rather than just a number. Schedules stop a crew fob from working on a Sunday night. An expiry date shuts off a contractor’s fob when the job should be done, without anyone having to remember. When someone leaves your employ, one action disables their credential and nothing else changes.
Fobs, video intercoms and cameras working together
A fob log proves which credential was used, not who was holding it. For a household that difference matters, so the reader is usually one piece of a small system:
- A video intercom at the gate for guests, deliveries and anyone without a fob, answered from phones in the house or away from home.
- A camera framed on the reader, so each fob event has a clip showing the person and the vehicle.
- Phone credentials for people who visit often but should not carry a physical fob, revocable remotely.
Those logs and clips are sensitive, because they record the routines of family members and staff. We create separate admin roles, keep the list of people who can view history short, and help you decide how long records are kept.
Driveway gates beneath a tall canopy
Memorial’s mature pines and oaks change the engineering at the gate.
- Solar struggles in shade. A solar operator that thrives on an open lot can run short under heavy canopy, especially once a reader and controller add a constant draw. Where cable can reach, mains power with battery backup is more dependable.
- Roots come first. Digging an open trench across the root zone of a big tree can injure it. Directional boring beneath roots and driveways avoids an open trench across a finished landscape.
- Tall trees attract lightning. Nearby strikes induce surges on long cable runs, so suppressors at both ends of the gate cable are part of our standard design here.
- Foliage blocks wireless. A radio bridge from house to gate may not see through dense leaves; we test the path before relying on it.
- Water finds low ground. On lots that slope toward Buffalo Bayou or its tributaries, pedestals, operator electronics and enclosures stay above where water stands after heavy rain.
Permits and approvals in the Villages and enclaves
Because each Village is its own municipality, rules on new driveway gates, pedestals inside setbacks, fences and, in some Villages, work near trees come from that Village’s city hall, not from the City of Houston. They differ from one Village to the next, so we confirm the requirements for your address before a bore is started or a pedestal is set. In townhome enclaves and condominium associations, changes to common gates go through the board, and sometimes an architectural committee, before work begins.
Shared gates in townhome enclaves and condominiums
A Memorial Drive enclave of twenty or forty homes often runs a gate system bought many years ago, a drawer of old prox fobs whose holders nobody can name, and a keypad code shared far more widely than anyone intended. A practical upgrade plan:
- Audit the current database against the owner roster and disable every credential that does not match.
- Replace the shared keypad code with per-household credentials, and give guests a video intercom call or a temporary phone pass instead.
- Move residents to encrypted 13.56 MHz fobs so copies cannot be made at a kiosk.
- Name one or two board members or the management company as administrators, with written rules for issuing and disabling fobs at every sale or lease.
Memorial City and CityCentre offices and clinics
Suites in multi-tenant buildings usually sit inside the landlord’s own access system, which controls the lobby, garage and elevators. A tenant system normally begins at the suite door, and the first question is whether the tenant’s fobs can also be enrolled in the building system so staff carry one credential instead of two. In medical and professional suites, we separate public areas from rooms holding records, medication or equipment, and set schedules so evening cleaning crews reach only what they need to clean.
An EVOTECH Memorial-area project, step by step
- A site walk covering the gate, the doors, available power, tree positions and any existing intercom or cameras.
- A user plan listing each person or group, their openings and their hours.
- Confirmation of Village, association or landlord requirements.
- An itemized written quote with every component and labor item shown separately.
- Cable, boring where needed, pedestal and enclosures, surge suppression, controller and battery backup.
- Readers, locks or the gate operator interface, plus intercom and camera tie-ins.
- Enrollment under names with schedules and expiry dates, then a test of every credential, a power cut and the gate’s safety devices.
- Admin training so you, your house manager or your association can issue and revoke fobs without a service call.
Price drivers, and the errors that bring technicians back
What affects the quote
- Distance to the gate, and whether cable is bored, trenched or carried by a wireless bridge.
- The number of openings: vehicle gate, pedestrian gate, service entrance, detached garage or guest house.
- Intercom and camera integration.
- Credential technology and whether you want phone credentials.
- A cloud platform subscription versus locally hosted software.
- Stone columns, masonry or finished interiors that complicate cable paths.
What causes callbacks
- Shared fobs or codes, which make it impossible to cut off a single person.
- Contractor credentials issued with no expiry date.
- A reader added to a solar gate under canopy with no power budget worked out.
- A gate cable run with no surge suppression.
- No camera view of the reader, so a log entry cannot be checked against a face.
