WiFi Roaming Optimization in Katy, TX 77492

The meeting holds fine at the kitchen island and cuts out halfway up the stairs. In Katy’s two-storey brick homes that is almost never the internet plan — it is a handoff that never happened. EVOTECH IT LLC fixes the handoff rather than selling you speed you already have. Licensed and insured low-voltage contractor, rated 5.0 stars.

The call survives the kitchen and dies halfway up the stairs

Almost every household that calls us about this describes the same handful of moments, and each one has a specific cause that has nothing to do with the speed on the bill.

What you noticeWhat is actually happening
The call drops on the stairsThe phone is still holding the downstairs radio. There is no better option overlapping at that point, so it hangs on until the link fails outright.
Full bars upstairs, nothing loadsThe icon shows what the phone hears. It cannot show whether the distant unit can hear the phone answer, and that direction fails first.
The game room is fine, the primary bedroom is notTwo rooms the same distance away are not equivalent. A duct run, a masonry chimney or a foil-faced attic wall sits between one of them and the source.
It works until everyone is homeCapacity, not coverage. Every device shares airtime, and the slowest connection on a radio sets the pace for the rest.
Fine on the patio, useless by the poolSignal is leaking outward through glass doors at the back of the house and simply running out of range, with nothing outdoors to pick it up.

Sorting out which of these you have takes a measured walk through the house, not a guess. They have different fixes and only one of them is helped by faster internet.

The handset makes the decision, and it makes it late

Wireless roaming is entirely client-driven. Nothing in a home network can order a phone to change radios — it can only make the alternative obviously better and make staying obviously worse. Device makers deliberately set a late threshold, because a gadget that jumps between radios at the slightest excuse feels far more broken than one that clings.

What that means in practice is that a house needs to be engineered to produce a clean exit at the right spot. The place where one radio stops being the best choice has to be a place where another is already clearly stronger, and that place should be a landing, a hallway or a doorway — somewhere people pass through — rather than a desk or a bed where they sit still.

Getting that right is mostly about position and restraint. One unit turned up to maximum covers more of the floor plan and makes the problem worse, because it remains just about audible everywhere and therefore never stops being the option a device holds onto. Two quieter units placed deliberately hand devices over cleanly and leave no confusion about which one is better.

A note on 77492 addresses

Delivery in this range runs through boxes at the Katy post office rather than to a street, so the address on your account tells us nothing about the house. That is not a problem — it simply means the survey is arranged around the property itself.

The homes we are called to under a Katy mailing address sit across the master-planned neighbourhoods and older subdivisions spread along Cinco Ranch Boulevard, Fry, Mason, Westheimer Parkway and out toward FM 1463 and the Fulshear side. Broadly: two-storey brick, slab foundation, an attic that gets punishingly hot in August, a game room or media room over the garage, and a covered patio that the family treats as another room. Give us the street address and the gate details and the visit is booked.

The small metal panel in the closet under the stairs

Most Katy production homes were finished with a structured wiring panel tucked into a closet, a laundry alcove or the wall under the stairs, with a handful of cable and data runs terminating there from bedrooms and the living area. It is nearly always the most useful thing in the house for this work and nearly always ignored.

We check what is actually landed there, what grade of cable was used, and which of those runs reach somewhere worth putting a radio. A jack behind a bedroom television is not ideal, but a run we can extend to a hallway ceiling is exactly what the design needs. Reusing a run that already exists saves a pull and keeps the work tidy.

Where nothing lands where a radio belongs, the attic is usually a friend in a two-storey Katy house — a ceiling location on the landing is often reachable from above without opening a single wall. We identify the route during the estimate and tell you what it involves before you agree to anything, including whether attic heat means the work is better done early in the day.

Half of what is on your network cannot roam at all

Count the connected things in a modern Katy house and the phones and laptops are a minority. There is a doorbell, two or three cameras, a thermostat per zone, a garage opener, a pool controller, a robot vacuum, a printer, speakers in a couple of rooms and a television or two. None of them walk anywhere, and most of them will never change radios once they have joined.

They matter to a roaming project for two reasons. First, they are the devices most likely to be stranded when equipment is moved or replaced, so we record what is connected where before anything changes and check them afterwards. Second, many of them only speak on the 2.4 GHz band, which is the crowded one, so the channel plan has to keep that band clean rather than treating it as an afterthought.

The honest fix for a fixed device is a radio within genuine reach of where it is mounted, not cleverer handoff settings. A doorbell at the front of the house and a pool controller at the back are two separate coverage requirements, and pretending otherwise is how a ‘fixed’ network still drops a camera every evening.

Covering the patio, the pool and the back of the lot without shouting

The covered patio is where these homes actually live for a good part of the year, and the coverage out there is usually an accident — whatever escapes through the rear glass doors. That is why it works at the table nearest the house and fails at the far end, and why a phone sitting outside often refuses to hand back to an indoor radio when someone walks in.

Treating outdoors as a designed area instead of an overspill solves both halves. A weather-rated unit under the patio soffit, fed by its own cable, gives the back of the property a real radio to attach to and gives devices coming indoors a clean boundary to cross. Detached garages, casitas and workshops across the yard get the same treatment rather than being expected to borrow from the house.

Turning the indoor equipment up to reach the pool is the tempting shortcut and it backfires: it degrades the handoff inside the house, pushes your network well into the neighbours’ yards on both sides, and still does not deliver a usable link where you wanted it.

Gate access, HOA rules and what the last hour looks like

Most of these neighbourhoods are gated or have a manned entry, so we arrange the code or the visitor listing before the day rather than on the driveway. Where anything is mounted on an exterior wall or under a soffit we keep it discreet and within what the association normally permits, and if a deed restriction makes a position awkward we will find another one instead of leaving you to argue about it later.

Before we leave, the same route gets walked again with the same measurement running, a live call is held from the upstairs bedroom to the patio while you watch, and every fixed device — doorbell, cameras, thermostats, pool controller, printer — is confirmed back online. Ladders, offcuts and packaging leave with us.

You keep a simple diagram of what went where, the network credentials, and the settings we chose. Neither the visit nor the estimate costs anything, and every element of the quote appears on its own line so you can see what you are paying for. Reach us on (832) 359-2425 or at /contact/.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mesh kit from a big-box store enough for a two-storey house with a game room?
Sometimes, and sometimes it is the reason you are calling. A mesh kit works acceptably when the satellite units are placed within good range of each other and the house is not fighting them. It struggles when a satellite is pushed out to the far corner where coverage is needed, because it then has a poor link back and repeats a weak signal. The single biggest upgrade is usually feeding each unit with a cable instead of letting them relay.
Do I need an access point in every room?
No, and that would make things worse rather than better. Too many radios in a small area interfere with one another and give devices more chances to make a poor choice. A typical Katy two-storey is well served by a small number of correctly placed units, with extras only where a detached structure or outdoor area genuinely needs its own.
Does running cable mean holes in my ceilings?
Usually far fewer than people expect. In a two-storey house with attic access we can often reach a landing or hallway ceiling from above and finish with a single tidy penetration that the mount itself covers. We walk the intended route with you during the estimate so there are no surprises on installation day.
Our pool controller drops off every summer. Will this fix it?
Possibly, but for a different reason than the rest of the work. Equipment at a pool pad sits behind an exterior wall and a lot of open ground, and it almost certainly cannot change radios on its own. The fix is giving it a radio in real range, which is often the same outdoor unit that solves the patio. We test it specifically rather than assuming.
Can you get through the gate, or do we need to meet you there?
Either works. Give us the gate code or add us to the visitor list ahead of time and we can arrive without you waiting on the driveway. If your neighbourhood requires a resident to be present, tell us and we will book a window that suits your day.
We rent the house. Is this still worth doing?
Often yes, with the approach adjusted. We can do a great deal with placement, power, channel planning and settings without altering the property at all, and where a cable is worthwhile we use existing runs and reversible mounts. We will tell you which parts move with you and which stay with the house before you decide.
How long does a house this size take?
Most two-storey homes are a single visit: survey, cable, mounting, configuration and the verification walk. Larger homes, outdoor areas or a detached structure can extend it, and if we think a second visit is likely we say so in the estimate rather than discovering it halfway through the day.
