Video Wall Display Setup in Houston, TX 77057
In Uptown the hard part is rarely the video wall. It is the building. Certificates of insurance, freight elevator windows, after-hours access, a slab nobody may drill into and a demising wall the lease will not let you touch decide the schedule long before anyone opens a panel box. EVOTECH plans that side of the job first, then the array.
Before anything is drilled in an Uptown building
Tower and mixed-use addresses around Post Oak and Westheimer run on house rules, and the rules are not negotiable at eight in the morning on install day. This is the paperwork and the choreography that has to be settled first.
| What management asks for | Why it exists | How we handle it |
|---|---|---|
| A certificate of insurance naming the building and the management company | Nobody works in the building uninsured, and the certificate has to name the right entities exactly | We are a licensed and insured contractor and issue the COI to whatever wording the building requires, in advance of the date |
| A booked freight elevator window | Panels, frames and racks do not go up the passenger cars | Deliveries are timed to the booked slot, and the array is staged so the window is used once, not three times |
| After-hours or weekend working | Noise, dust and corridor obstruction are not acceptable during tenant hours | Evening and weekend crews, with the space handed back clean before business opens |
| Loading dock and badge or escort arrangements | Security control and dock scheduling | Named technicians submitted ahead of time, so nobody is stuck at a desk in the lobby with a pallet |
| Landlord approval for anything attached to the structure | Leases govern penetrations, and tenant improvement rules vary building to building | We give you a drawing and a plain description of every attachment so the approval request is easy to submit and easy to say yes to |
The slab is not fair game
Many Uptown floors sit on post-tensioned concrete, where cables inside the slab are under enormous tension. Drilling into one is dangerous and expensive. Nothing gets cored in a building like this without scanning first and without the building management’s permission, and in most tenant fit-outs there is a route that avoids coring altogether.
What Uptown walls are made of, and what to do when you cannot touch them
Four surfaces cover nearly every commercial brief we see in 77057, and the fourth is the one that catches people out.
Concrete shear walls and columns
Immensely strong and entirely unforgiving. Anchors are set with the right embedment, reinforcement is located first, and the frame is shimmed because poured concrete is not a flat mounting surface.
CMU and demising walls
Common between tenancies. Anchors land in the block itself; if the wall is shared with a neighbour, the lease usually has something to say about penetrations and noise, which is worth reading before design.
Metal stud partitions
The standard interior wall of a fit-out, and perfectly capable of carrying an array once continuous backing has been installed between the studs. If the partition is already closed, we open a strip, add the backing, and close and finish it as part of the job rather than hanging a heavy grid on drywall anchors and hoping.
Glass, curtain wall and walls the lease protects
Some positions simply cannot be fixed to – a glazed elevation, a landlord-owned core wall, a finish you are contractually required to return unmarked. The answer is a freestanding structure: a floor-supported frame or a purpose-built joinery element carrying the panels, touching the protected surface lightly or not at all. It also happens to be the most lease-friendly option in the building, because nothing of it belongs to the landlord when the lease ends.
In restaurants and showrooms the array is very often set into millwork instead, which needs the cabinet maker and the AV design working from the same dimensions. We supply the recess sizes, the ventilation requirement and the service clearance before the joinery is built, not after.
Restaurants, bars and showrooms: the things that go wrong on a Friday night
The Westheimer and Post Oak hospitality corridor is where video walls work hardest, and where the failures are the most public. A design that is beautiful at ten in the morning and unusable at nine on a Saturday evening is not a good design.
- Daylight through storefront glass is the brightest room condition you have. Panels get specified for the sunniest afternoon the space will ever see, and finish matters as much as raw output when a wall of glass is opposite the screens.
- The wall is silent; the room has zones. Sound does not come out of a video wall – it comes from a distributed audio system with zones the staff can set, so the patio, the bar and the dining room are not fighting each other. Keeping picture and sound separate is what makes the place feel professional.
- One button, not nine remotes. Opening staff get a single control that powers the wall, selects the right layout and sets the source. If running the system needs a laptop and a login, it will be running the wrong content within a month.
- Heat, grease and dust are real loads. Anything near a kitchen line or an open grill needs clearance, filtration and a cleaning schedule. Displays choke slowly, and the symptom looks like a failing panel long before anyone suspects the vents.
- Feeds and layouts should be planned for the busiest night. How many sources, which one takes the big region when something matters, who is allowed to change it. We build the presets with your manager so the decision is made in advance rather than during a rush.
- Cable and equipment stay out of reach. Racks live in a back-of-house room with ventilation and a lock. Nothing in a public space should be reachable by a customer with an opinion.
Commissioning, handover and what the number depends on
The last day is the one that determines whether you enjoy the system. We align the grid, set bezel compensation so images cross the seams correctly, match the panels to each other for brightness and colour, test every source and every preset, label both ends of every cable and hand over a written record of the configuration – addresses, settings, model and serial numbers.
Then we train whoever actually touches it, which in a restaurant is the opening manager and in an office is the facilities or IT contact. The test we care about is the Monday morning one: the first person in gets the wall running the way it is supposed to, without calling us.
What moves an estimate in 77057
Commercial Uptown work has cost drivers that a residential job never sees, and we itemise them rather than burying them:
- Access conditions – after-hours labour, booked elevator windows, escorted deliveries and restricted parking all cost time
- How the weight will be carried: existing structure, new backing, or a freestanding frame built because the lease forbids attachment
- Cable pathways in an occupied building, including plenum-rated cable and proper support above a ceiling grid
- Whether a processor is needed for multiple simultaneous sources, and how many layouts you want built
- Electrical scope – a licensed electrician brings the circuit, and that appears as its own line, never hidden inside ours
- Coordination with millwork, a general contractor or a landlord approval cycle
