Surveillance Storage Expansion in Katy, TX 77494
West of the Grand Parkway, 77494 is Katy’s newest half: Cinco Ranch West, Seven Meadows, Firethorne, Tamarron and the neighbourhoods still filling in around them. Houses here arrived with builder-run cabling and a structured media enclosure, which is a genuine head start. Then 4K cameras went on the outside, and a drive sized for a different decade started filling in under two weeks.
4K changed the arithmetic, and nobody was told
Higher resolution is sold as a picture-quality decision. It is also, silently, a storage decision, and the second half rarely comes up at the point of sale.
An 8MP camera writes several times what the 1080p camera it replaced wrote, every hour, forever. Swap six cameras and the recorder that comfortably held a month is now holding days. Owners usually blame the recorder, or assume a fault, when in fact the system is performing exactly as configured and the configuration simply outgrew the disk.
The clearest way to see it is to fix the capacity and let the configuration move:
| Configuration on one 4 TB drive | Approximate days retained |
|---|---|
| 6 × 4MP, motion with pre-roll buffer | six weeks or so |
| 6 × 4MP, continuous | about two weeks |
| 10 × 4K, continuous, modern codec | four days, give or take |
| 10 × 4K, continuous, older codec | two to three days |
Those are estimates for planning, and a measured figure from your own system will differ. The shape is the point: the same drive delivers anything from days to weeks depending on choices that are free to change.
The builder’s media panel is not a rack
Nearly every home out here has one: a recessed enclosure under the stairs, in a laundry, or in an upstairs hallway, holding the fibre terminal, the router, a small switch and whatever else got added.
It was sized for exactly that. Add a multi-bay recorder and two more drives and you have introduced a heat source and a vibration source into a sealed metal box with no airflow. Drives in that environment run warm continuously, which shortens their life, and adjacent equipment gets no relief either.
What usually works instead is moving the recorder out to a small wall-mounted rack or vented enclosure in the garage wall, a hall closet or a study, leaving the builder panel to do its original job. It is a short move — the cabling is already structured and terminates in a known place — and it buys airflow, service access and somewhere to put a battery backup that currently has no home.
Smart codecs: what compression honestly saves
Modern encoding is a genuine lever. Newer compression can cut the stream substantially against older encoding at comparable quality, and smart or adaptive modes go further by dropping the bit rate while a scene is static and raising it the moment something moves.
Two cautions keep it honest. Smart modes shine on static scenes such as a side yard or a rear elevation, and do far less on a camera watching a street where something is always moving. And compression can be pushed past the point of usefulness: if the plate or the face is no longer readable when you zoom in, the file you saved is a file you cannot use. We tune to the lowest bit rate that still resolves what that specific camera exists to resolve, then we check it by zooming into a real frame, not by trusting a slider.
One compatibility note. Some older phones, browsers and third-party viewing software struggle with newer codecs. Before switching every channel across, it is worth confirming that whatever you actually watch footage on can still play it.
Decide the recording mode camera by camera
Blanket settings waste more storage in these houses than anything else, because a large home here typically has cameras watching wildly different scenes.
- Driveway, gate and front elevation: record continuously. These carry vehicle and approach detail that motion triggers routinely clip short.
- Rear elevation and side returns: motion, with detection zones drawn tightly so fence lines and new-build landscaping do not trigger all afternoon.
- Pool and garden: scheduled, with overnight hours weighted heavily and daytime left to events.
- Garage interior: event-based with a pre-roll buffer of several seconds so you see the door opening, not just what followed.
Tuning comes before buying. A false-trigger problem solved with a redrawn zone is free; the same problem solved with capacity is not, and the extra drive fills with footage of moving shrubs.
Buy the bay count, not just the terabytes
When a system is being planned rather than rescued, the question shifts. It is less about which drive fits today and more about how much room the chassis leaves for the next three years.
Points worth settling before ordering: how many bays the unit has and how many are free; the maximum capacity it can address in each; whether drives pooled together should be matched in size, since mismatched drives in some configurations leave the difference unusable; and whether you want a spare bay held empty on purpose for the expansion you already know is coming.
Drives should be surveillance-class in every case. A general desktop drive pulled out of an old computer is a false economy here — that workload rating was never written for a device that writes ten streams around the clock in a warm closet.
Fibre out here makes a second copy practical
Much of west Katy has upstream bandwidth that older parts of the region simply did not, and that changes what is realistic. Where a slow upload once made off-site copies theoretical, sending event clips away from the property is now straightforward for most households here.
The sensible design is still hybrid, not cloud-only. Local drives carry the full continuous timeline, because that is where the volume is. The cloud, or a second recorder at an office or a family member’s house, carries event clips from the few cameras that matter most. That arrangement survives theft of the recorder and a total failure of the storage pool, without needing the entire system to fit through the uplink.
Leave room for the cameras you have not bought yet
Camera counts out here only move in one direction. The gate camera comes after a delivery goes missing. A package camera follows. Then a shop or garage camera, then something covering a pool gate once children are walking.
So we size to the channel count you will plausibly reach, not the count on the wall today, and the difference in capacity between those two numbers is usually smaller than the cost of doing the job twice. If cameras are being added at the same time, the exterior work may need architectural review through your association before anything is mounted — the storage side never does, but the mounting sometimes will. Camera installation and cabling are quoted separately so you can stage the work.

Frequently asked questions
We have a builder media panel under the stairs. Can extra drives live there?
Usually they should not. Those enclosures were designed around a router and a small switch, and they have no meaningful airflow. Adding a multi-bay recorder makes them run warm permanently, which is exactly what shortens drive life. A small vented wall rack elsewhere is inexpensive, and the existing structured cabling generally makes the relocation quick.
Will switching everything to a newer codec get me the month I want?
It will help, sometimes substantially, but it rarely gets a 4K system from days to a month on its own. Compression, recording mode and capacity are three levers and most homes here need two of them. We tune first because tuning is free, then quote whatever capacity remains necessary to reach your target.
Do all the drives in the recorder have to be the same size?
Not always, but mismatched drives waste space in several common pooling arrangements, where the usable capacity is governed by the smallest member. If the recorder simply treats each disk independently, mixing is harmless. We confirm which behaviour your model uses before recommending what to buy.
Our association approves exterior changes. Does a storage upgrade involve any?
No. Everything in a storage expansion happens inside the house, at the recorder. Architectural review becomes relevant only if new exterior cameras, mounts or visible conduit are part of the same project, and in that case we will tell you which elements are likely to need submitting.
We plan to add two cameras next year. Should we size for them now?
Yes, if the budget allows. Two additional 4K channels change the arithmetic noticeably, and adding capacity once is cheaper in labour than doing it twice. At minimum, leave a bay free deliberately rather than by accident.
Does lowering the frame rate make 4K affordable to store?
It reduces the stream, and for scenes where nothing moves quickly it is a reasonable trade. It is a poor trade on a driveway or street camera, where the detail you want tends to be a vehicle in motion and a lower frame rate is what produces the blurred frame nobody can use. We set frame rate per camera, according to what that camera is for.
