Soundbar Audio Tuning in Houston, TX 77019
Two entirely different acoustic problems share this ZIP code. In the towers along Allen Parkway and Buffalo Bayou, low frequency is a neighbour relations question before it is a fidelity question. In the pre-war houses of River Oaks, Avalon Place, Courtlandt Place and Hyde Park, plaster, stone and tall glass produce a liveliness that no factory preset expects. We tune for whichever one you are living in.
One ZIP code, two unrelated problems
Before anything is adjusted we establish which of the two 77019 situations you are in, because the correct first move is opposite in each.
In a residential tower the constraint is transmission. The building is concrete, the neighbours are on the other side of a slab, and the loudest thing your system produces is also the thing most efficiently carried through the structure. The tuning objective is a system that is satisfying inside your unit and effectively invisible outside it.
In a house built between the 1920s and the 1940s the constraint is reverberation. Lime plaster over wood lath, stone or terrazzo entries, tall single-pane windows in deep reveals, and formal rooms furnished with hard antique pieces. These rooms ring. A bar tuned flat in such a space will sound bright and restless, and the dialogue intelligibility problem is the mirror image of the one you get in a carpeted modern den.
We ask which of those you have before the appointment is even scheduled, because the two visits carry different tools and, in a tower, different paperwork.
In a tower, the bass you feel is travelling through the building
Subwoofers couple to the floor. In a wood-framed house that coupling is inefficient enough to be forgiven. On a post-tensioned concrete slab it is extremely efficient, and the unit below yours hears a version of your evening that has had everything except the low end stripped away, which is precisely the most irritating thing to be on the receiving end of.
Several measures work together here. Decoupling the subwoofer from the slab with an isolation platform reduces structural transmission without touching how it sounds to you. Raising the crossover so the bar handles more of the lower midrange takes load off the subwoofer. Trimming the narrow band where the room and the slab are most enthusiastic removes the one or two notes that carry furthest. And setting a sensible maximum on the subwoofer channel prevents a single loud sequence from undoing all of it.
A dynamic-range setting is the other half of the answer. Compressing the distance between whispered dialogue and an explosion lets you watch at a genuinely lower master level and still follow every line, which is the outcome most tower residents actually want.
If a complaint has already been made, say so. It changes the target we are tuning toward, and it is far easier to design for a known limit than to guess at one.
Tuning for the volume you actually use after ten at night
Most calibration is performed at reference levels nobody uses. If your real listening happens quietly, late, with someone asleep down the hall, then a system optimised loud is optimised for a situation you never inhabit.
At low levels the ear becomes markedly less sensitive to both extremes of the spectrum, so a balance that is correct at volume sounds thin and lifeless turned down. Where the hardware allows it, we build a second saved profile with a compensating low-end lift, a modest presence lift in the vocal range and dialogue enhancement enabled, so the quiet profile stays full and intelligible instead of simply smaller.
Headphone and personal-listening paths get checked in the same visit when the bar supports them, because in a tower that is frequently the real solution for anything watched after midnight.
Plaster, stone and glass: rooms that ring
The older houses in this part of Houston have surfaces that modern construction simply does not replicate. Hard plaster is denser and more reflective than drywall, and a room with plaster walls, a plaster ceiling, tall windows and a stone hearth can hold a sound long after it was produced.
The audible result is a bright edge on voices and a loss of separation between dialogue and score. We attack it by measuring the decay in the room rather than assuming it, shelving the treble to taste, restraining any processing that adds artificial reverberation or width, and identifying the first reflection points so you know where a single well-placed piece of furniture or a heavier drape would do the most good.
We do not propose visible acoustic panels in a formal River Oaks room unless you raise it. In most of these houses the honest recommendation is a rug, lined curtains and a bookcase with actual books in it, and those belong to you rather than to us.
Working around art, antiques and a room you will not rearrange
Acoustic advice that begins with moving the sofa is useless in a room designed around a particular painting and a particular pair of chairs. We take the room as fixed, measure from the seat you use, and find what can be improved without asking you to redesign anything.
That usually means the subwoofer, which is the one element with genuine freedom. It is small, it is floor-standing, and it can often be tucked somewhere visually unobtrusive that measures far better than the obvious corner. Cabinets and consoles, on the other hand, are traps: a bar behind a solid door or recessed deep inside a joinery unit loses its high frequencies and its remote line of sight, and if that is the situation we will say plainly that the enclosure, not the electronics, is the limiting factor.
We also mind the environment we are working in. Shoes off where that is the house rule, nothing leaned against a wall, no equipment placed on a finished surface without protection, and any conservation or lighting concern raised with you rather than worked around.
Management, insurance certificates and getting in
For tower residents the administrative side is usually the slow part and we handle it as routine. EVOTECH IT LLC is a licensed and insured low-voltage contractor, in the trade for more than twenty years and rated 5.0 stars, and we can produce a certificate of insurance naming the building for management ahead of the visit.
Give us the building rules when you book: the loading dock hours, whether the freight elevator must be reserved, whether a resident has to escort contractors, and whether work is restricted to weekday hours. A tuning visit is quiet, tool-light and short, so it rarely strains those rules, but arriving without the reservation wastes your morning.
Private-street and deed-restricted addresses in River Oaks have their own access conventions. Let us know how the gate and guard arrangement works and we will follow it exactly.
What changes the scope of the work
The estimate is free, performed on site, and itemised. What moves it: the number of listening positions, whether the bar must be dismounted and repositioned, whether an isolation solution is needed under the subwoofer, whether surrounds are being added and how their power and signal will reach them without visible cabling in a finished pre-war room, and whether any existing installation must be corrected before calibration can mean anything.
We never quote a figure before we have seen the space, and we will not guess at one over the phone. Call (832) 359-2425 or send the details through the contact page and we will arrange a time that suits the building as well as you.

Frequently asked questions
The unit below us complains about the bass even when we watch quietly. Does that mean no subwoofer at all?
Rarely. It means the subwoofer needs to be decoupled from the slab, crossed over higher, limited at the top of its range, and relieved of the two or three notes that the structure carries best. Combined with a dynamic-range setting that lets you enjoy the film at a lower master level, most households keep the subwoofer and the complaints stop.
Our board will not permit drilling into the slab. Can the system still be mounted and set up?
Yes. Ceilings and structural slabs are off limits in most towers and we work within that. Mounting into interior partition walls, using existing furniture or shelving, and routing cable in low-profile surface channel are all normal solutions here. We confirm what your specific building allows before we bring a drill anywhere near a wall.
Our drawing room has plaster walls and a stone floor. Will tuning be enough, or do we need acoustic treatment?
Tuning will make a clear, audible difference, and it will not fully cancel a genuinely reverberant room. We will show you what the measurements say, tell you which two or three soft additions would matter most, and leave the aesthetic decision entirely with you. We do not push visible panels in a formal room.
We watch at very low volume late at night and lose every line. What is the actual fix?
A dedicated low-level profile. Dialogue enhancement on, dynamic range compressed, a small low-end and presence compensation for how hearing changes at quiet levels, and the surround processing pulled back so speech stays anchored to the screen. Saved as a separate preset so you are not rebuilding it nightly.
Can you give our building manager a certificate of insurance before the appointment?
Yes, and it is a normal request. Tell us the building name and what the management company needs listed, and we will have it sent ahead of the visit along with whatever elevator or dock reservation the building requires.
The house dates from the 1930s. Will this involve opening up walls?
A pure tuning visit involves no construction at all. If the work later grows to include surrounds or a relocated subwoofer, plaster over lath is handled very differently from drywall, we plan the least invasive route, and nothing gets opened without your explicit agreement and a written scope.
