Security Camera Repair in Houston, TX 77027

In this pocket of Houston the camera itself is rarely the thing that failed. Something between the camera and the recorder gave up quietly — a connector pushed through a masonry wall thirty years ago, a power supply baking in an unvented closet, a switch port that took a hit in a storm. We find that thing first, and we only replace what is genuinely finished.

Start from what the system is doing, not from what it should be doing

A repair visit that begins with a diagnosis instead of an observation usually ends with a replaced camera and the same complaint a month later. The first half hour on site establishes which link in the chain stopped, because the symptom points at it far more reliably than the age of the hardware does.

What you are seeingWhere the fault usually lives
One channel is black, everything else is normalThat single run — a connector, a fuse, an injector port or a damaged span. The recorder is rarely at fault when the other channels are healthy.
Every camera dropped at the same momentShared infrastructure: the recorder, the main supply, the switch, or a surge that took the common device rather than the edge ones.
Daylight is crisp, night is a gray washInfrared bouncing off a soffit, a wall or a dirty dome, or a tired emitter ring — an aiming problem, not a dead camera.
Live view is fine, but the clip you needed was never keptStorage: a failing drive, a schedule nobody checked, or motion sensitivity so high that the days you wanted were overwritten early.
It works at the house but not from your phone elsewhereThe network path, not the cameras. Router swap, address change or upload bandwidth.
A picture that flickers, rolls or comes and goes with the weatherMoisture in a termination, or a marginal run that only fails once the copper warms or wets.

A large share of the calls we take in 77027 end with re-terminations, a cleaned lens, a corrected aim and a new supply — with the original cameras still on the building.

Why repairs in Afton Oaks and Royden Oaks are usually a cabling job

The housing stock here is mostly mid-century brick and stucco that has been added to more than once. Those additions matter: a room built on a slab off the back of an older house has no continuous attic path over it, so whoever ran the original cameras improvised — through a soffit, around a fascia, straight through the masonry with the hole aimed slightly the wrong way.

Decades later, that improvisation is what we are called to. The failures repeat with some consistency:

  • A penetration with no drip loop. Cable entering a wall on an upward slope turns the hole into a funnel. The copper corrodes inside the wall, well away from anything you can see.
  • Twist-on connectors from the analog era. They were quick and they were never weather-tight. Their contact resistance climbs slowly, which is why the picture degrades over years rather than dying outright.
  • Attic splices that were never boxed. Two cables joined with tape above a hot ceiling will eventually let go, and finding them means tracing rather than guessing.
  • Layers of different people’s work. A house that has changed hands twice often carries two abandoned systems alongside the live one, none of it labeled.

We trace runs with a tone generator rather than pulling ceilings, re-terminate into weather-rated enclosures, add the drip loop that was missing, and wherever possible reuse an existing penetration instead of putting another hole through your brick. Cable that tests clean stays. Cable that does not gets replaced along the affected span only.

Live oaks, infrared bounce and the cameras that got worse while nobody touched them

The mature canopy along the streets off Westheimer and through Highland Village is the reason a system that was excellent five years ago can be nearly useless now, with every component still working exactly as designed.

Foliage behaves strangely under infrared. Leaves return a great deal of it, so a branch grown into the near field reads as a bright white mass, the camera closes its exposure to cope, and the driveway behind goes to shadow. Add a spider web strung across the emitter ring — they are drawn to the warmth and the insects it attracts — and the frame hazes over at dusk. Limbs moving in wind also trigger recording all night, which quietly eats your retention.

If the seasonal pruning crew has been through and your night footage changed afterwards, that is not a coincidence. Removing a limb alters both the frame and the way the street lighting lands on it.

The correction is optical work, not new equipment: bring the mount down under the canopy line or out onto a fascia with a clear sight line, retune exposure and infrared power, separate the illuminator from the lens where bounce is unavoidable, redraw the motion zones so branches sit outside them, and clean and polish the dome. We check the result after dark, because a camera focused at noon is frequently soft at two in the morning.

Mid-rise and high-rise work: the part of the repair that belongs to the building

Along Post Oak and the streets feeding it, a good deal of the residential stock is vertical, and in those addresses the constraint is rarely technical. The association has rules, the building engineer controls the risers, and the loading dock has a calendar.

We plan around that rather than arguing with it: an insurance certificate with management before the day, a booked freight elevator slot where one is required, nothing penetrating the exterior envelope or a demising wall, and any cable crossing a room run in surface raceway finished to match the trim. Balcony rules vary by building and we read them before quoting.

Two things come up on almost every unit we service in a tower. The first is aim: a camera on a balcony or at an entry door will see common corridor or a neighbor’s glass unless it is deliberately framed away from them, and we apply privacy masks over whatever is not yours to watch. The second is where the recorder lives — a closet with no airflow will cook a drive, and a drive that has been cooking is the reason the footage you wanted was not there.

EVOTECH IT LLC is a licensed and insured low-voltage contractor of more than twenty years, so management paperwork is routine rather than an obstacle.

Westheimer and Post Oak storefronts: restaurants, salons and retail

Commercial repairs in this ZIP have their own pattern, and it is driven by the room the camera lives in.

Kitchen and service-corridor cameras take on a film of cooking aerosol that no amount of infrared power will punch through; the fix is cleaning on a schedule and, where the camera sits in the exhaust path, relocating it a few feet. Dining rooms and patios that face west are shooting into the afternoon sun for two hours a day and need exposure handled rather than resolution added. Over a register, the frame is usually far too wide — a camera asked to cover the whole counter cannot also describe a face or show what changed hands.

The failure that costs real money, though, is retention. A card dispute arrives weeks after the event, and many systems we inspect keep days rather than weeks — motion sensitivity is high, resolution was raised without adding storage, or the drive is smaller than everyone assumed. We measure what you actually retain at your current settings, and if it does not cover your claim window we say so.

Point-of-sale text overlay is worth checking too — it commonly stops working after a terminal upgrade, and nobody notices until the transaction and the video need to be matched.

Repair, partial rebuild or replace — decided in front of you

We do not condemn a working system in order to sell a new one. The decision is mechanical and you should be able to follow it:

What the testing showsWhat we recommend
Cable and recorder are sound, one camera has failedReplace that camera and nothing else, matched to what the recorder already speaks.
Recorder has failed, cameras are currentRecorder only, once we confirm it supports the cameras you own.
Analog cameras, coax tests cleanHigh-definition over the existing coax. The cable in your walls is the expensive part and it stays.
Multiple breaks, buried splices, a run that was never rightRe-cable that run only; healthy runs are left alone.

Whichever way it falls, the quote is itemized — labour, hardware and anything optional shown separately. The on-site estimate is free.

What the estimate visit actually involves

We do not quote a repair over the phone, because the unknown — which part of the chain broke — is precisely the thing you are hiring us to identify. What we can do is come out, find it, and put a number on it before anything is touched.

Expect us to walk every camera position, read the recorder logs and drive health, test the suspect runs, check the picture after dark when the complaint is a night-time one, and then go through what we found with you. If the property is gated or the building requires management approval, tell us when you book so the visit is not wasted at the front desk.

Call (832) 359-2425 or send the details through our contact page. EVOTECH IT LLC is licensed, insured and rated 5.0 stars, and we work on whatever is already on your building regardless of who installed it.

Frequently asked questions

My system is over ten years old. Is any of it worth keeping?
Frequently, yes — and the part worth keeping is usually the cable. Coax that tests clean can carry modern high-definition video, which means the cost and disruption of a rebuild drops sharply. The cameras and the recorder are the parts that age out. We test before we advise, because the answer genuinely differs house to house.
Will you work on a system your company did not install?
That is most of what we do. We are not brand-locked and we do not require you to replace working equipment to become a customer. Bring us a mixed system from three different eras and the first thing we will do is document it so that everyone, including you, knows what is actually there.
My building requires vendors to be approved before they can work in the unit. Is that a problem?
No. We are a licensed and insured low-voltage contractor and can provide a certificate of insurance to your management company ahead of the visit. Give us the management contact when you book and we will handle the submission and the elevator or dock booking with them directly.
The recorder will not start. Can the footage still be recovered?
Sometimes. If the recorder failed but the drive survived, there is often a path to the data. If the drive is the failure, it depends on how it failed, and we will not promise a recovery we cannot guarantee. Leave the unit powered off until we look at it — repeated power cycling makes a marginal drive worse.
Do you have to drill through my brick or stone?
We look for a route that avoids it first: existing penetrations, soffit and fascia paths, attic runs, and the gap behind a downspout or trim board. Sometimes masonry is genuinely the only way through, and when that is the case we will show you exactly where and why before anything is drilled.
