River Oaks, Avondale & Allen Parkway · Houston, TX 77019

Projector Image Calibration in Houston 77019

One ZIP code, two entirely different jobs: a screening room inside a pre-war River Oaks house, and a residential tower unit where the building decides what is allowed on the ceiling. We calibrate in both, and we plan for both differently.

Two kinds of address, one ZIP code

77019 is unusual even by Houston standards. On one side of it sit River Oaks, Avondale and Courtlandt Place — deed-restricted streets of houses built largely in the 1920s and 1930s. On the other sit the residential towers along Allen Parkway and West Dallas, looking north over Buffalo Bayou.

The projectors are often comparable. The work around them is not. A historic house is a question of what the structure will accept and how to leave no trace on finishes that cannot be patched invisibly. A tower unit is a question of what the building’s management, engineer and insurance requirements permit, and when the freight elevator is free.

We scope the two separately from the first phone call, because the thing that delays this work is almost never the calibration itself.

Calibrating inside a pre-war River Oaks house

The rooms used for projection in these houses were rarely designed for it. A formal living room, a library, or a garage apartment over the motor court gets converted, and the original architecture stays exactly where it is.

Several features of that architecture matter to the picture. Beamed and coffered ceilings interrupt the run between the mount point and the screen, and a beam in the wrong place can clip the top of the image before it ever reaches the wall. Original lath-and-plaster walls behave differently from drywall — they will hold a properly specified anchor, but they crack in a way that does not sand out, so the mount location is a decision to make once. Deep millwork and panelled surfaces absorb and reflect light unevenly across the room.

Ceiling heights in these houses are generous, which is genuinely helpful: there is room to place a projector where the geometry wants it rather than where the structure forces it. The trade-off is throw distance long enough that focus uniformity across the frame needs checking carefully, corner by corner.

High-rise units: the building sets the rules

In the Allen Parkway towers the technical work is often the simpler half. The building governs the rest, and every building governs it slightly differently.

  • Certificate of insurance. Management will normally require a current COI naming the association before a contractor is admitted. We carry insurance and are used to getting the certificate filed ahead of the visit rather than arguing about it at the desk.
  • Freight elevator and dock. Equipment and ladders go up the service elevator in a booked window, not the passenger cab. That window is finite, and it dictates the schedule.
  • Slab restrictions. Many towers are post-tensioned concrete, where drilling into the slab is prohibited outright because of the tendons inside it. That rules out a conventional ceiling anchor and pushes the solution toward an approved structure, a soffit, or a rear-shelf or short-throw placement instead.
  • Working hours and sign-in. Contractor hours are usually restricted, and access runs through the concierge with prior authorisation from the owner.

None of this is an obstacle if it is handled in advance. It becomes one when a contractor arrives without it.

Hard finishes put light back on your screen

The interiors in this part of Houston tend to be beautifully finished, and beautiful finishes are reflective. Polished stone, lacquered cabinetry, large mirrors, glass-fronted shelving and a floor-to-ceiling window wall all return light into the room.

For a projected image, reflected light behaves the same way ambient light does: it lifts the black floor and drains saturation. In a tower unit facing north over the bayou, the same projector and the same screen measure very differently at four in the afternoon and at nine in the evening — not marginally, but by an amount anyone can see.

Our approach is to calibrate for the condition you actually watch in. If that is one condition, we build one configuration and make it excellent. If you genuinely use the room both in daylight and after dark, we build two and label them, so the correct one is a single selection rather than a rummage through the settings.

Grayscale, gamma and colour: what the meter is reading

The reference is not a matter of taste. Video content is mastered against defined standards, and a calibration is the act of bringing your projector to them.

Greyscale is measured at points across the full range from near-black to peak white, checking that each step is neutral rather than tinted. Gamma is tracked against its target so that the transition from shadow to highlight follows the curve the content was graded on. The primary and secondary colour points are then measured against the standard colour space and pulled in as far as the projector’s colour management system allows — which, on some units, is further than on others, and we will tell you honestly where yours lands.

Accuracy comes first. If after that you prefer a slightly warmer or slightly brighter presentation, that is a deliberate offset applied from a known-correct baseline — which is a completely different thing from a projector that is simply wrong.

Working clean in a finished home

Most of these rooms are finished, furnished and in use. We work accordingly: floor protection down before anything is opened, shoe covers on, ladders felted, and everything we move photographed first and put back where it was.

We do not handle artwork — if a piece needs to come off a wall, that is a conversation for you and whoever normally handles it, arranged before we arrive. Where an estate manager, interior designer or existing audio-visual company is involved, we are happy to coordinate directly with them and stay inside the boundary of our own scope.

EVOTECH IT LLC is a licensed and insured low-voltage contractor, has worked across Houston for more than twenty years, and holds a 5.0-star rating.

Booking the visit

Tell us the address, the projector model and the screen, and whether the property is a house or a unit inside a managed building. If it is the latter, the name of the management company is genuinely useful on the first call, because the insurance certificate and elevator booking can then be started immediately.

The on-site estimate is free and the quote is itemised. We do not give figures over the phone for a room we have not measured, and we do not quote a calibration before establishing that the projector is properly placed — because if it is not, that is the first line of the quote.

Frequently asked questions

Will you need to drill into anything?

For a calibration on an already-mounted projector, no — the work is measurement and settings. Drilling only enters the conversation if the projector needs to be repositioned to fix geometry. In a pre-war house that means selecting an anchor appropriate to plaster and locating solid framing behind it. In a post-tensioned tower it may mean no drilling into the slab at all, and an alternative mounting approach instead. Either way you approve the method before anything is opened.

Can you work with my building’s management and insurance requirements?

Yes, and it is normal for us. We are insured and can have a certificate of insurance naming the association sent to management ahead of the visit, work inside the building’s designated contractor hours, book the freight elevator through the office, and sign in at the desk under your authorisation. Give us the management contact when you book and we will start that paperwork rather than discovering it on the day.

We already use an audio-visual company. Can you calibrate without disturbing their system?

We can. A calibration lives entirely in the projector’s own picture settings and does not require changes to control systems, matrix switching or rack wiring. We document every value we alter so your existing provider has a complete record of what changed. If we find something outside our scope that they should address, we will tell you plainly rather than working around it.

Does calibration affect the manufacturer’s warranty?

No. Everything we adjust is reached through the projector’s normal user and service menus using controls the manufacturer provided for this purpose. We do not modify hardware, open sealed assemblies or load unofficial firmware.

Can you calibrate a screen that drops from a ceiling lift?

Yes, and it is worth doing carefully, because a tensioned drop screen does not always land in precisely the same position each time. We check where it actually settles across several cycles and set the image geometry to that real position rather than to a single lucky one. If the screen is arriving inconsistently, that is a mechanical issue we will identify and describe, whether or not it is ours to fix.
