Intercom & Entry System Installation in Katy, TX 77494
Newer west-Katy homes usually have something worth building on — a structured panel in a closet, a stub at the front door, conduit somebody had the sense to leave. We use what is there and add only what is missing. EVOTECH IT LLC: licensed, insured, 20+ years, 5.0 stars, free on-site estimate.
Houses out here usually start with an advantage
Almost everything in 77494 went up from the mid-2000s onward — Seven Meadows, Firethorne, Tamarron, the western reaches of Cinco Ranch and the newer sections pushing out toward the Grand Parkway. Compared with an eighties retrofit, these homes hand an installer three useful gifts: a media enclosure in a closet or utility room, a passive cabling star that already reaches several rooms, and builders who left at least some conduit behind the walls.
That does not make the job trivial, but it does change where the money goes. Less of it is spent creating a cable path and more of it goes into the hardware you actually see and use. Our approach is to verify what the builder genuinely left, use every bit of it, and quote only the gap.
Making the builder’s structured panel earn its keep
Open the metal door in the closet and you will typically find the fiber terminal, the provider’s router, and a punch-down block where a handful of cable runs land. What is often missing is any active equipment, meaning those runs are terminated and doing nothing.
To drive a wired door station from there, a few things need adding: a switch that supplies the correct class of power over the cable, a tidy patch arrangement so runs are identifiable rather than a bundle, and enough ventilation that a sealed metal box in a closet does not cook what is inside it. We also check what the cable actually is. More than once we have found the run to the front door is thin doorbell wire rather than data cable, which is an entirely different design.
Wired first, wireless second, cellular only when it must be
Our ordering is deliberate. A cable-fed station takes its power and its data from one run and is unaffected by whatever the Wi-Fi is doing, which is why it is the default anywhere a cable can plausibly reach. Wireless is the fallback for an entry that cannot be reached without tearing something apart, and it lives or dies on the signal at that exact spot. Cellular is reserved for a gate genuinely beyond the reach of both, and it brings a monthly carrier cost with it.
One limit shapes a lot of decisions on these larger lots: standard Ethernet runs about 328 feet before it stops being dependable. A front door is nowhere near that. A gate at the far corner of an acre-plus lot in Tamarron or Firethorne can be, and past that line we are looking at fiber with converters at each end, a powered extender, or the cellular route.
The community gate, your gate, and which one you can change
Several neighborhoods here have a manned or automated front entrance run by the association. That call box is association property. A resident cannot have it reprogrammed or replaced, and any installer who offers to is telling you something untrue.
What we can do is everything on your side of the curb: a station at your own driveway gate, at a courtyard gate on the newer elevations, at a side yard gate, or at the front door — all answering on the same monitor and the same phones. A number of households in 77494 end up with two entries covered and are surprised how much the courtyard one gets used, because that is where deliveries actually get left.
Keeping hardware discreet enough to get approved
Architectural committees in these sections are active and specific about anything that changes a front elevation. The practical answer is to make the hardware look like it came with the house.
- Flush-mounting a door station into the brick or stone surround instead of surface-boxing it onto the face.
- Matching the finish to the existing exterior fittings rather than accepting whatever color shipped.
- Keeping gate hardware on the post and out of the beds, where it reads as part of the gate assembly.
- No visible exterior cable anywhere. If cable has to be on the outside, it is in painted conduit following a line that already exists.
Where a submission is likely needed, we tell you at the estimate and supply photographs and a placement sketch for the packet.
If the house is still under construction
The cheapest moment in the entire life of an entry system is the window between framing and drywall, and in a growing ZIP like this one there are always houses sitting in it.
During that window we can run data cable to the front door, the courtyard gate and the driveway post, drop a sleeve under the drive before the concrete is poured, leave a pull string in every route, and terminate it all into the media enclosure ready for hardware later. None of that is affordable once the slab is finished and the walls are closed.
We work around the builder’s trades rather than through them, and we do not touch anything covered by their warranty. If you are under contract and not yet at drywall, this is the call to make early.
How a typical install day runs
Positions get marked and agreed first — you look at the proposed spot before a drill exists. Runs are then pulled or proved, the stations are mounted and weather-sealed, the panel gets its switch and power, and the monitor goes where the household will actually hear it.
Testing is done with people at both ends: audio each way, video in full sun and after dark, and the gate or strike operating under real load rather than a bench test. Phones get configured for everybody who needs access, not only the person who booked the job.
You finish with labelled cabling, the administrator credentials in writing, a short walkthrough of issuing and revoking codes, and a tidy site. Questions afterwards go to (832) 359-2425 and reach the people who did the work.
What actually changes an itemized quote out here
No figures appear on this page, and none get quoted blind over the phone. What we look at when pricing a 77494 job:
- Whether the builder’s runs exist, reach the right places and test clean.
- How far the furthest entry sits from the panel, and whether that crosses the distance limit.
- Number of stations — front door only, or door plus courtyard plus driveway.
- Whether there is a gate operator already, and its condition.
- Whether a sleeve exists under the drive or a bore is needed.
- Flush-mount work into stone or brick versus a straightforward surface mount.
- Whether the network needs a switch and backup power added to support it.
Each of those is a separate line on what we hand you, so you can see exactly what you are buying and, if you want, defer part of it to a later phase.
