Camera Replacement and Installation in Katy, TX 77494
Before anything gets bought, one question deserves an honest answer: does this camera need replacing, or does it need moving, cleaning or re-aiming? Three very different problems all get called a bad camera.
Three different problems, and only one of them is a bad camera
A surprising share of replacement enquiries turn out not to need replacement. We would rather say that on the estimate than sell hardware that fixes nothing, so every visit starts by sorting the symptom into one of three verdicts.
| What you are seeing | Usual cause | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Milky or foggy picture behind the dome | Seal has failed and moisture is inside the housing | Replace – a breached housing cannot be re-sealed reliably |
| Night view is a white wall of glare | Infrared reflecting off a soffit, wall, or a spider web across the lens | Clean, shield or re-aim. New hardware repeats the fault |
| Colours wrong, or stuck in night mode by day | The internal filter that swings in and out has seized | Replace – it is a mechanical failure inside |
| Picture drops out or the camera reboots in a loop | Marginal connection, failing power supply or injector | Repair the path, not the camera |
| One camera dark, the rest fine | That camera or that one run | Test the run before ordering anything |
| Every camera dark at once | Recorder, power or the drive | The cameras are almost certainly innocent |
The line worth remembering is that you cannot purchase your way out of an aiming problem. A camera pointed at the wrong twelve feet of driveway will still be pointed there in 4K.
When a Katy system has genuinely reached the end
Plenty of systems do deserve replacing. These are the reasons that hold up:
- The way in disappeared. The hardware works, but the manufacturer retired the app or stopped issuing security updates. An unsupported device facing the internet is a liability regardless of how good its picture is.
- You can see the event but not the person. Early systems resolve enough to tell you something happened and never enough to say who. That is a resolution ceiling, not a settings problem.
- The recorder has simply run out of hours. A drive writing continuously for six or eight years has done an enormous amount of work, and recorders rarely give notice.
- Electrical damage. West Katy takes hard summer storms. A nearby strike or a surge travelling along a cable run can leave cameras half-working in ways that never fully resolve.
- Water. Parts of far west Katy took water in the 2017 flooding, and equipment sitting on a closet floor was among the first things lost. Anything submerged is finished, whatever it appears to do afterwards.
- Heat and years. A decade of sun on a housing degrades gaskets and plastics long before the electronics complain.
There is one more, and it is the most common of all: nothing is broken, but the coverage plan was wrong from the start. That is worth naming honestly, because it changes what you should buy.
In 77494 the usual culprit is that the landscaping grew
Cinco Ranch, Grand Lakes, Kelliwood and the neighbourhoods around them were planted out from the mid-1990s through the 2000s. The live oaks that were thin sticks when a camera went up in 2013 are now full canopies, and a great many of the cameras we are asked to replace here are simply looking at a tree.
The pattern is recognisable. The driveway view slowly fills with leaves. Overnight alerts climb as branches move in the wind and the infrared lights them up. Somebody concludes the camera has become oversensitive, replaces it with a better one, mounts it in the same bracket, and inherits exactly the same problem with a sharper picture.
The real fix is almost always position and lens rather than a new model. Moving a camera two metres along an elevation, or dropping it below a canopy line and narrowing its view, does more than any upgrade. Sometimes that means a new cable route, which is worth knowing before you buy.
Two other local shapes matter here. Rear fence lines in these neighbourhoods often back onto greenbelts or detention basins, where there is no ambient light at all and infrared range claims meet reality. And on the cul-de-sacs that define much of 77494, the family cars tend to sit precisely where a plate or a face would need to be captured, so the useful angle is frequently not the obvious one. In the gated sections such as Firethorne and Falcon Ranch, guest and contractor traffic arrives at a predictable point, which is usually where a camera earns its place.
Specify against the job, not against the box copy
Once replacement is the right call, each position gets specified for what it is actually meant to deliver. Three jobs come up repeatedly in Katy, and they want different cameras.
The front door. A face at close range, backlit by a glass door or an afternoon sky. Wide dynamic range matters far more than resolution, because the challenge is a bright background behind a dark face.
The end of the driveway. If reading a plate is genuinely required, that is a dedicated camera aimed tightly at the plate line with a fast shutter, not a general view that happens to include the driveway. At night, headlights will overwhelm an ordinary exposure and the plate becomes a white rectangle. A camera asked to do overview and plate capture at once will do neither.
The wide shot. A back yard or a side return, where the job is to know something happened and roughly where. This is where a wide lens is correct, and where expecting identification is unrealistic.
Two more decisions repay attention. West-facing elevations here look straight into low afternoon sun for part of the year, which is a dynamic-range requirement, not something to be fixed later in settings. And anything mounted within reach of the ground should be a sturdier, tamper-resistant housing rather than the same unit used at eaves height.
Replacing a system in stages without ever going dark
Not every replacement has to happen in one visit, and spreading it out is often the sensible choice. It only works if it is sequenced deliberately.
Replace by priority rather than by convenience. The front entry, the driveway and the gate earn their upgrade before a side-yard camera that watches an empty fence, even when the side yard is the easier ladder. Keep the existing recorder running throughout, so coverage never lapses while the new system is being proven, and where old and new overlap for a week or two, that redundancy is a feature.
Write down the changeover date. Six months later, when somebody needs footage from a particular week, knowing which system held which period saves an afternoon of searching. Mixed vendors can usually be made to co-operate through the ONVIF standard for the video itself, though the extra features each manufacturer adds on top rarely cross over, and it is better to hear that now than to discover it after purchase. Retired cameras that still work often have a second life on low-priority interior positions.
What an EVOTECH replacement visit in Katy looks like
- Diagnose before quoting. Every complaint gets sorted into repair, re-aim or replace, in front of you, with the reasoning explained.
- Review the actual footage, including a night clip, because most of what a system gets wrong only shows after dark.
- Walk the property and re-plan positions, allowing for how the landscaping and the household have changed since the original install.
- Confirm what carries over – cabling, recorder, storage – so you are not paying twice for anything still serviceable.
- Agree the order of work if it is being staged, priority positions first.
- Install, seal and set each camera against the job that position is meant to do, then check the result on screen.
- Return after dark or verify at dusk, since glare, headlights and infrared bounce are invisible at midday.
- Hand over properly. New passwords, confirmed retention, working remote access, and the old gear taken away.
What the cost depends on, and what we will not do
Estimates are itemised and given after we have seen the property. We do not quote camera replacement over the phone, because until somebody has looked at the cable, the recorder and the positions, any figure is a guess.
What moves it: how many positions are genuinely being replaced rather than repaired, whether the recorder and cabling carry over, mounting height and access, how much storage the new resolution requires, whether any position needs a new route because it is being moved, and whether the work is staged across more than one visit.
What we will not do: replace a camera we believe only needs re-aiming, quote a resolution upgrade without telling you what it does to your retention, or leave a system on factory passwords. If the honest answer is that you need two cameras rather than eight, that is the answer you will get.
We are a 5.0-star rated, licensed and insured low-voltage contractor who have worked Katy, Fulshear, Richmond and west Houston since roughly 2004 – which is long enough to have installed some of the systems we are now asked to replace.

Frequently asked questions
The image looks foggy behind the dome. Can it just be cleaned?
If the haze is on the outside of the bubble, yes – dust, pollen and spider silk all do this, and a clean is free of charge to you. If the fogging is inside, the seal has failed and moisture has entered the housing. That cannot be reversed in the field, and a camera that has been damp inside will usually fail properly before long. That one is a replacement.
The camera still works but the app was discontinued. Do I have to replace it?
If the manufacturer has stopped issuing security updates, we would replace it. A camera that is reachable from the internet and no longer patched is a standing risk, whatever the picture looks like. Some older cameras can be adopted by third-party recording software through the ONVIF standard, which is worth checking first, but that depends entirely on the model and we will tell you honestly whether yours qualifies.
Can I add new cameras to the recorder I already have?
Often, provided the recorder supports the resolution, has spare channels and enough power capacity, and can still be updated. Mixed-brand combinations usually work for video through ONVIF while losing manufacturer-specific extras. The limit people hit most often is not the channel count but live viewing capacity, since many recorders can record more streams than they can display at full quality at once.
Will a new camera read the plate at the end of my driveway?
Only if it is specified for that one job. Plate capture needs a tight, dedicated view along the plate line and a fast shutter to freeze a moving vehicle, and at night headlights will wash out a normal exposure. A general-purpose camera covering the whole frontage will show you that a vehicle arrived and rarely more. We will tell you plainly whether your driveway geometry makes it achievable before you spend anything on it.
Our equipment was flooded. Is any of it worth keeping?
Assume nothing that was submerged is reusable, including the recorder and its drive, and treat anything with water history as suspect even if it powers on. Cable in conduit or in the attic is often fine and worth testing, which can keep the job much smaller than expected. The lasting lesson we pass on is to mount the recorder well off the floor and on a surge-protected supply.
How long should cameras last in Houston-area weather?
We avoid quoting a lifespan, because it depends heavily on exposure. A camera under a deep eave on a north elevation may run for many years; the same model in full west sun with driving rain ages considerably faster. Heat, humidity and ultraviolet degrade gaskets and plastics before the electronics fail, which is why replacements here are so often about a breached seal rather than a dead sensor.
