Auto Lock Setup in Katy, TX 77494

A typical west Katy house has five or six ways in — front entry, garage side door, the mudroom door off the garage, a patio slider or French pair, a side gate, sometimes a casita. The useful question is not how to enable auto-lock. It is which of those openings should be locking themselves, on what delay, and what happens to the eleven-year-old, the dog walker and the lawn crew when they do. EVOTECH IT LLC maps that door by door before programming anything: licensed, insured, 20+ years, rated 5.0 stars.

Not every opening in a 77494 house should lock itself

Blanket-enabling the feature on everything is the fastest route to a family that turns it all off. Large Cinco Ranch and Seven Meadows floor plans have openings with genuinely different jobs, and they deserve different answers.

OpeningAuto-lock?What we watch for here
Front entryYes, with an exterior credentialSidelights and door glass. A bolt that relocks itself is doing nothing if the interior turn is reachable through a pane beside it — the answer is laminated glass or security film, never a double-cylinder deadbolt, which creates a serious problem getting out in a fire.
Garage into mudroomUsually yes, generous delayIn an attached garage this is often a fire-rated assembly with a self-closer. Hardware goes on without compromising the rating, and the closer stays.
Garage side door to the yardYesFrequently the least-maintained door on the property and the one most likely to need strike work before automating anything.
Patio French pair or sliderCase by caseA double door relies on flush bolts in the inactive leaf and an astragal that swells in humidity. Automating the active leaf against a swollen astragal produces jams all summer.
Pool or side-yard gateDifferent system entirelyA barrier gate around a pool has to stay self-closing and self-latching with its latch out of a child’s reach. We add access on top of that requirement, never at its expense.
Casita, guest suite or bonus room over the garageYes, with scheduled codesThis is the opening where time-limited credentials earn their keep.
Detached shop or rear garageDepends on coverageOften a separate power and wireless island at the back of a deep lot — worth checking before choosing hardware.

The people using the door decide the settings, not the spec sheet

Nearly every complaint we hear about auto-lock traces to a household pattern nobody asked about during installation. So we ask first.

Children who get home before the adults

A child arriving to a self-locked door needs a credential that does not depend on a charged phone. A keypad code, entered by them, that appears in the log as theirs. Phone-only access for someone without a reliable phone is a lockout waiting to happen on a hot afternoon.

Grandparents and anyone who struggles with a keypad

Physical buttons with real travel and a backlight beat a flat capacitive pad, particularly in direct afternoon sun where the glow disappears and a hand hovers over the wrong digit. If someone in the house will use that door weekly, they should try the pad before you buy it.

Regular service visits

A dog walker needs a midday window on weekdays. A house cleaner needs one morning. A lawn crew needs the side gate and nothing else. Each of those is a separate scheduled credential, which is both more convenient and considerably safer than one code everybody knows.

Guests and deliveries

Single-use or date-limited codes for visiting family, and a camera covering the opening if packages are being handed through it. The credential and the camera are worth planning together rather than bolting one onto the other later.

Fitting auto-lock onto systems that are already in the wall

Houses in this part of Katy rarely start from nothing. There is usually a builder-installed alarm panel in a closet, a video doorbell at the front, a garage controller, and at least one voice platform. The design question is which of those is going to be in charge.

  • The alarm panel as controller. Many panels ship with a Z-Wave radio already inside. Using it keeps locks, arming and sensors under one roof and one app, and usually gives you arm-on-lock behaviour for free. It also ties the locks to whatever monitoring arrangement the panel is on.
  • The lock’s own platform. Simpler, independent of the alarm contract, and one more app on the phone.
  • A voice or smart-home platform on top. Fine as a convenience layer. We would not make it the only path to a door.
Pick one controller of record. The failure we see most often in already-automated houses is two systems both issuing relock commands to the same lock — a panel automation and a platform routine, each undoing the other. The door behaves erratically, the batteries drain in weeks, and the log looks like a fight because it is one. One system owns the lock; everything else observes.

Worth noting separately: if your neighbourhood entrance is a community-controlled gate, that access lives with the association and its vendor. Your locks and your gate remote are unrelated systems, and no amount of programming inside the house changes the one at the front of the section.

Decide now what happens when it does not work

Every automated lock eventually fails to open for someone. Designing that moment on purpose is what separates a convenience from a problem.

  • Dead batteries. Know before you need it whether your model has external jump terminals, a key override cylinder, or neither. A mechanical key that lives only inside the house it opens is not a plan.
  • Internet down. Mesh and Thread locks keep working locally when the connection drops. Cloud-dependent Wi-Fi locks may lose remote control entirely — the keypad still works, which is exactly why the keypad codes matter.
  • Power outage. Battery locks are indifferent. Electric strikes, gate operators and anything with a controller are not, and if those are in scope they need a standby supply with a battery that has actually been tested.
  • A phone that is flat, lost or in a pool. This is the most common real-world failure and it is solved entirely by codes.
  • A documented lockout path. A physical key in an outdoor lockbox with its own code, or with a neighbour, and someone other than one person who knows where it is.

We write this down on handover. It takes five minutes at the end of the appointment and it is the part people thank us for eighteen months later.

How a 77494 auto-lock appointment runs

  1. Walk every exterior opening with you, including the ones you were not planning to automate, because the decision only makes sense across the whole property.
  2. Test each door mechanically — bolt travel, strike fit, hinge condition, closer behaviour — and flag anything that needs attention before it can be automated reliably.
  3. Talk through the household. Who comes and goes, when, and with what in their hands.
  4. Agree the plan per door: automate or not, delay, credential type, and who is in charge of it.
  5. Install and program, including credentials enrolled for each person present rather than one code for the house.
  6. Cycle test every automated door, open and closed, watching for reluctance.
  7. Label and document — a one-page sheet with the doors, the delays, whose code is whose, the failure plan, and the model numbers.

We work across Katy, Houston, Sugar Land, Richmond, Fulshear and Cypress, and the estimate to look at your doors and give you this plan costs nothing.

What changes the number on a Katy 77494 job

Quotes are itemised and written after the walkthrough. We do not quote a dollar figure before seeing the openings, because the doors are the variable. The drivers on a house this size:

  • How many of your openings you actually want automated after the walkthrough — frequently fewer than the number you started with
  • Whether the existing alarm panel has a usable radio, which can remove the need for additional hardware
  • Door and frame correction on any opening that will not take a clean automated throw today
  • Matching finishes across several doors on a street-facing elevation
  • Wireless coverage to the far corners of a two-storey plan or a detached structure at the back of the lot
  • Gate, strike or keypad work that needs power and cable pulled to it
  • Any architectural approval process the association requires for visible exterior hardware
  • Access and scheduling — gated sections, alarm codes and working around the household

Frequently asked questions

How many of my doors actually need this?
Usually fewer than people expect. On a typical west Katy walkthrough we end up automating the front entry, the mudroom door off the garage and sometimes a casita, and deliberately leaving the patio doors on manual through summer. Automating an opening that a family will fight with just teaches them to disable the feature everywhere.
My alarm panel already has a Z-Wave radio. Should the locks use it or their own app?
If the panel is staying and you are happy with it, using its radio is usually the cleaner answer — one app, one log, and the option to have arming and locking happen together. If you are thinking about dropping the monitoring contract, keeping the locks independent avoids tying the doors to a decision you have not made yet. We will lay out both and let you choose.
My kids do not carry phones. Can they still get in?
Yes, and they should not be depending on a phone anyway. Each child gets their own keypad code, so their arrival shows in the log as theirs. Phones are a convenience layer on top; codes are the reliable path for anyone whose device might be flat, forgotten or confiscated.
There is glass either side of my front door. Does auto-lock actually help?
It helps, but it is not the whole answer. If the interior thumb turn is reachable by breaking a sidelight, the honest fix is laminated glass or a security film on those panes, or a lock with an interior lockout mode. We do not recommend a double-cylinder deadbolt that needs a key from the inside — that traps people in a fire, which is a far worse risk than the one it addresses.
Will the association have an opinion about the hardware on my front door?
Sometimes, on visible exterior finishes and elevations facing the street. It costs nothing to check before ordering, and it is easier than replacing a lock after the fact. We work to whatever the approval requires; we just would rather know about it during the estimate.
What happens in a power outage, or when the internet goes out?
Battery-powered locks are unaffected by either — the keypad keeps working. Remote control through an app needs the internet, which is one more reason every household member has a code. Electric strikes, gate operators and panels do care about power, and where those are part of the job we size a standby supply and test the battery rather than assuming it.
Can the pool gate be part of this?
Access can be added to a gate, but the barrier requirements come first: it stays self-closing and self-latching, with the latch positioned out of a small child’s reach. We will not modify a pool barrier in a way that weakens that, no matter how convenient it would be.
