Home Cinema Riser Wiring for New Katy Homes: Plan It Before the Drywall
Across Katy’s master-planned communities, many floor plans include an upstairs media room, and most builders leave the seating details to the buyer. The cheapest moment to wire a tiered seating platform is while the walls and floor framing are still open. EVOTECH, based right here in Katy, plans the seat layout, marks every receptacle and cable for the builder’s electrician, roughs in the low-voltage side and returns after flooring to connect and test. If your builder keeps outside trades off the site until closing, we have a clean path for that too.
Where riser wiring fits in a Katy new-build schedule
Production homes move fast, and each stage closes a door. This is the sequence we plan around, whether the builder is in Cinco Ranch, Cane Island, Elyson or one of the newer communities spreading north and west of town:
| Stage | What should happen for the theater | Who |
|---|---|---|
| Contract and design center | Ask what the builder’s electrical and low-voltage options include, and whether outside contractors may work before closing | You |
| Before framing is covered | Seat model chosen, platform size fixed, receptacle and cable positions drawn | You and EVOTECH |
| Pre-drywall | Builder’s electrician sets boxes and circuits to the drawing; low-voltage cable and conduit pulled | Builder’s electrician, EVOTECH if permitted |
| Platform framing | Riser built around the stubs, with cable protected and access planned | Builder, carpenter or your chosen trade |
| Flooring | Carpet installed over the platform and steps | Flooring installer |
| Seat delivery and finish | Seats set, power supplies connected, transducers and step lights terminated and tested | EVOTECH |
Missing the pre-drywall stage does not ruin the project. It just moves work from open framing to fishing cable through finished walls, which takes longer.
Open-web floor trusses: the route most upstairs media rooms use
Many newer two-story homes are framed with engineered open-web floor trusses rather than solid joists. For theater wiring that is good news. The triangular openings between the webs form ready-made paths for cable and flexible conduit, so getting from a first-floor equipment closet or under-stair space up into the media room is usually straightforward while the ceiling below is open.
There is one firm rule: truss chords and webs are never cut, notched or drilled without the truss designer’s approval. Everything passes through the existing openings. The same trusses carry the platform, and a loaded row of recliners is a concentrated load, so if the builder is framing a riser, ask them to confirm it with their framing or truss supplier.
Downstairs media rooms sit on the slab. There, power comes to the riser from the nearest wall, and low-voltage cable drops from the attic or rises from a first-floor closet through the wall into the platform cavity.
What to hand the builder’s electrician
Builder electricians work fast from a plan. Give them a vague note like add outlets for theater seats and you will get a couple of receptacles on the back wall at standard height, which is exactly wrong for a platform. We prepare a one-page drawing that specifies:
- Each receptacle location dimensioned from two walls, tied to the specific chairs it serves
- Box height relative to the future platform deck, so boxes end up inside the cavity or on the riser face rather than behind it
- A request for a dedicated seating circuit, separate from the equipment rack and projector
- Which receptacles must stay unswitched so a reclined seat can always return upright
- Where the step-light driver will live, with an accessible receptacle for it
- Low-voltage brackets and conduit stubs for transducers, rear speakers and spare capacity
The 120-volt work stays with the licensed electrician. The drawing and every low-voltage run are ours, performed under our own low-voltage license and insurance.
When your builder does not allow outside trades before closing
Many production builders keep third-party contractors off an active site, and some limit what their own electrician will change from the standard plan. If that is your builder’s policy, you still have workable options:
- Buy only the essentials from the builder. One or two extra receptacles on the media room’s back wall and an empty conduit to the likely equipment spot, if they offer them, give us a starting point.
- Wire after closing. The platform is built after you own the house, so its cavity still carries all the seat wiring. Only the runs between the riser and the rest of the house need to be fished through finished walls, typically through the attic above an upstairs media room.
- Check warranty terms. Some builder warranties exclude items modified by other contractors. Ask the builder’s warranty department in writing before anyone cuts into new drywall.
Seat features that change the wiring plan
Two chairs that look identical in a showroom can need different wiring. Before we draw anything, we confirm which of these your seats include:
- Power recline only needs one transformer per seat or per linked pair, placed so the cord follows the chair as it slides.
- Power headrest and lumbar add motors but usually share the same supply; the cord route is what matters.
- USB charging and cupholder lighting run from the seat’s own supply, so no separate wiring is needed, but kids will unplug a supply looking for a charger if it is visible.
- Tactile transducers need their own heavy-gauge speaker runs back to a dedicated amplifier, and ideally a platform set on isolation pads.
- Step and aisle lighting needs a low-voltage driver compatible with the room’s dimmer so the lights fade with the movie instead of flickering.
EVOTECH’s steps on a Katy new-home theater
- Review the floor plan and the builder’s options sheet with you.
- Confirm the seat model, then set platform height, depth and step layout from its published dimensions.
- Produce the electrician drawing and our low-voltage plan.
- Pull cable and conduit at pre-drywall where the builder allows it, or after closing where it does not.
- Test, label and photograph every run before the platform is decked, so you keep an as-built record.
- After carpet and seat delivery, connect everything, cycle each chair and tune transducers and step lights.
What shapes the estimate for a new-home riser
- Construction stage when we are brought in: open framing is simpler than finished walls
- Upstairs versus downstairs media room, and the route to the equipment location
- Seat count, rows, curved or straight layout, and features like transducers and step lights
- How much the builder’s electrician covers versus a separate electrician after closing
- Spare conduit and future-proofing you want included
Every estimate is on site, free and itemized. We do not quote numbers over the phone because the variables above swing the scope too much.
New-build mistakes that are hard to undo later
- Ordering seats after the platform is framed, then discovering the new chairs recline deeper than the platform allows.
- Accepting builder outlets on the back wall at standard height, which end up behind or under the platform framing.
- Putting the seating on the same circuit as the projector and rack.
- Closing the platform with no photos, labels or pull strings, leaving the next person guessing.
- Placing the step-light driver inside the sealed platform, where the first failure means cutting the carpet.
