Camera System Audit · River Oaks, West Gray & Allen Parkway · 77019

Surveillance System Health Check in Houston, TX 77019

Properties in this part of Houston seldom have one camera system. They have three, installed in different decades by different companies, partly removed, partly abandoned, and wired together by whoever came last. An audit answers the questions nobody has been able to answer for years: what is live, what is recording, who can see it, and how far back it goes. EVOTECH IT LLC has carried a low-voltage contractor licence and insurance through more than twenty years of Houston work, and holds a 5.0-star rating.

Three systems, twenty years, one set of wires

The single most common finding inside the loop is archaeological. An analogue system went in during one ownership. A second company added network cameras a decade later and left the first one energised. A gate contractor tapped into both for an entry camera. Somewhere along the way a room was remodelled and half of it was cut loose in the ceiling.

The result looks alarming on paper and is usually not. There is generally a healthy core of equipment worth keeping, buried under dead ends nobody has dared touch. Our first job is to map what exists: which cameras terminate where, which recorder each one writes to, which runs are live, and which are cut, capped or terminated into a piece of equipment that has not been powered since the last handover.

That mapping is the deliverable people value most, because it ends the guessing. Once there is a diagram, decisions stop being expensive gambles.

Accounts, passwords and the company that no longer exists

Ownership of the equipment is rarely in doubt here. Control of it very often is. Systems installed for a previous owner, or by an integrator who has since closed or been acquired, arrive with administrator credentials nobody present has. Sometimes the only working login belongs to a former estate manager or a contractor who moved on years ago.

We document every account that can reach the system, identify what can be recovered by legitimate means against what needs a factory reset, and re-establish administrative control in your name. Where a cloud service or monitoring agreement is attached, we tell you which company holds it rather than working around them in the dark.

What renovation work does to cabling in a pre-war house

Houses in this ZIP are worked on constantly, and low-voltage cable is the first casualty of a good remodel. It has no breaker, nothing shuts off when it is severed, and a trade encountering an unlabelled wire in a joist bay will usually cut it and move on. Nobody notices for months.

The building fabric compounds it. Plaster and lath does not open and close discreetly the way modern drywall does. Additions built onto original structures often have no attic above them and no accessible void below. A run that looks trivially short on a plan may have no legal route at all without cutting finished surfaces.

So the audit locates faults with test equipment rather than by opening walls. We identify where a break sits along a run before anyone proposes touching plaster, and we treat ‘no visible damage to the house’ as part of the specification rather than an afterthought.

Judging a camera at the hour it is supposed to work

A camera on a street shaded by mature live oaks performs nothing like the same camera on an open lot, and daytime inspection tells you almost nothing about it. Streets in this area are deliberately, beautifully underlit. The landscape lighting that makes a front elevation look wonderful at nine in the evening frequently puts a bright source directly in a lens, closing the iris and turning everything past it into silhouette.

Where night performance is the entire reason a camera exists, we come back after dark and look at the recorded image rather than the live preview. Recording compresses and discards detail that live view shows, so a face legible on the monitor can be unusable in the file. That difference only reveals itself if somebody checks the file.

If your home is a tower unit off Allen Parkway

Residents in the buildings along Allen Parkway and West Gray have a narrower but very real version of this service. Exterior mounting is not yours to authorise, corridors and garages are covered by building systems managed by the association, and anything permanent typically requires management’s written consent.

What a health check covers inside a unit is still worthwhile: the entry camera or intercom you rely on, in-unit recording and where it is stored, whether your footage is genuinely private to you, and whether what you have would survive a request for a clip. We will also tell you plainly when the honest answer is that your building already covers a concern and the money is better left unspent.

Who can watch, and how long the footage lives

A household here often includes staff, regular vendors, a property manager and family who come and go. Camera access tends to accumulate the same way keys do, and it is almost never reviewed. Part of the audit is simply listing who currently holds live view, who can export footage, and who receives alerts — and then reducing that list to the people it should be.

Retention gets the same treatment. Storage is finite, so keeping everything for a long time and keeping detail are in direct competition. We measure the window you actually have today, ask what it needs to cover, and set it deliberately. We also check aim at the property line, because a camera that oversees a neighbour’s garden or a bayou path creates a problem that no picture quality can offset.

What you are left holding at the end

You receive a written record: a diagram of what exists, a list of what is live and what is dead, measured retention, the accounts that can reach the system, and a prioritised list of what should be addressed. Items are separated into safety-relevant, worth doing, and cosmetic, so nothing is bundled to inflate a total.

That document tends to be useful well beyond the camera system. It supports an insurance conversation, it travels with the property at sale, and it means the next contractor who opens a ceiling knows what the unlabelled cable is. Whatever you decide to put right is quoted line by line. The audit costs nothing. Reach us on (832) 359-2425 or through our contact page.

Frequently asked questions

Nobody has the password and the company that installed it is gone. Is the system lost?

Almost never. Depending on the equipment, administrative access can often be restored through a documented reset procedure carried out by the owner or their authorised contractor. Recorded footage on a local drive is usually preserved through that process, though not always, so we check what is stored and why it matters before resetting anything.

Can you inspect without opening walls or disturbing finishes?

Yes — that is the normal way we work here. Faults are traced with test gear from accessible ends, and locations are identified before anything is opened. If a repair genuinely requires access through a finished surface, you are told where, how large, and what it involves, and you decide before any tool comes out.

We have a gate, an intercom and cameras from different installers. Can they be made to work together?

Often, and more cheaply than replacing everything. The audit establishes what each piece can talk to. Some older equipment is genuinely closed and will only ever run alone; other pieces integrate with a modest change at the recorder. We will tell you which category each item falls in rather than proposing a clean sweep by default.

How discreet is the visit itself?

Unmarked arrival, ordinary vehicle, and no equipment left sitting on a driveway. Most of the work happens at the recorder and at the cameras already in place. If you would rather the visit happened at a particular hour or with a particular person present, arrange it when you book and we will work to that.

Is there any point in a check on a system that is only a couple of years old?

There is, and the reasons differ from an older system. Newer installs fail on configuration rather than hardware: retention set far shorter than the owner believes, notifications going to a phone nobody carries any more, remote access left exposed, or a camera taken offline by an unrelated network change. None of that shows in the live view.

Will you tell me my system is fine if it is fine?

Yes, and we do regularly. Plenty of systems here need cleaning, re-aiming, a settings correction and nothing else. Saying so costs us a sale and keeps a client, which is the trade we would rather make. There is no dollar figure attached to anything until it has been seen in person.
