Digital Sign Installation in Cypress, TX 77429
A digital sign is not a television on a pole. It is an outdoor-rated LED cabinet that has to survive Gulf Coast humidity, be legible to a driver at 45 mph, dim itself at midnight, and stay reachable over a network you can actually get to. We handle the low-voltage half of that job across older Cypress – Jones Road, Huffmeister, Telge and the FM 1960 corridor.
A digital sign is a different animal from an indoor screen
People use one phrase for four different products, and the wrong one gets ordered constantly. What actually goes in around here:
- Electronic message center in a monument base – a sealed LED cabinet set into a low masonry monument at the driveway. The common ask on Jones Road and Huffmeister, and what churches and schools want.
- Pylon or pole sign with an LED section – a multi-tenant cabinet whose bottom panel becomes an LED module. Cheaper than a new structure, if the pole can carry it.
- Wall-mounted LED band above a storefront, usually tucked under a canopy on an older strip center.
- Drive-thru boards – outdoor-rated displays in weather enclosures, aimed at a car window rather than a sidewalk.
Mechanically they share almost nothing. What they share is the part that fails: signal, power conditioning, and nobody planning how a technician reaches inside the cabinet three years later.
Where our work starts and where the sign contractor’s ends
We say this on the first phone call because it saves everyone a wasted trip. EVOTECH is a licensed, insured low-voltage contractor. On a digital sign job the work splits cleanly:
| Task | Who |
|---|---|
| Engineered foundation, pole, monument masonry, sealed drawings | Sign contractor / structural engineer |
| Line-voltage feed, dedicated circuit, disconnect at the sign | Licensed electrician |
| Permit filing for the sign structure itself | Sign contractor, usually |
| Conduit path, pull string, data cable, fiber where the run is long | EVOTECH |
| Mounting, bracketry and alignment of wall and canopy units | EVOTECH |
| Controller, network reach, remote access, surge protection at both ends | EVOTECH |
| Commissioning: brightness curve, schedule, test content, handover | EVOTECH |
If you already have a sign company we slot in beside them and take the trench-to-controller half. If you are still shopping, we will tell you which trades you still need before anyone quotes you.
What we actually find on the ground in older Cypress
77429 is the settled half of Cypress – built out from the 1980s through the 2000s, well before the Grand Parkway retail wave. That history shows up in the sign work:
- Strip centers with masonry veneer and stucco sign bands. That band above the storefront is often a furred-out facade with a void behind it, not solid wall. It carries an LED band only if the bracket lands on real structure.
- Open-ditch drainage on the older arterials, which changes how conduit is routed to a roadside monument and how deep it has to sit.
- Mature tree canopy – the most underestimated issue here. A twenty-year-old live oak that shades the lot beautifully also hides a sign from the exact direction of traffic you bought it for. We check the sightline in person, at driving height, both directions.
- Churches and schools on deep lots. Long setbacks mean long data runs – where copper starts losing and fiber earns its keep.
- Unincorporated territory. Most of 77429 has no city sign department; permitting runs through Harris County, and frontage on US 290 can pull TxDOT in. Confirm before fabrication, not after the cabinet is built.
Pixel pitch, mounting height and a driver doing 45
The most expensive mistake on an outdoor sign is buying the wrong pitch – the distance in millimetres between LED centres. Rule of thumb: the pitch number in millimetres is roughly the closest distance in metres at which the image stops reading as dots, and about three times that is where it looks clean.
So a 10 mm cabinet read from a hundred feet out is fine; the same cabinet eight feet from a walkway looks like a toy. Paying for a 4 mm cabinet that will only ever be read from a moving car buys resolution nobody can perceive at speed.
Before anything is ordered we walk the approach and note four things: where a driver first gets an unobstructed view, the angle between sign face and direction of travel, how much visual clutter competes with it, and how many seconds of reading time the speed limit allows. That last number dictates words per message – not the software.
Signal, grounding and the part that actually fails
Digital signs rarely fail because the LEDs die. They fail because of what surrounds them.
Getting a signal out there
Three ways to reach a freestanding sign, in the order we prefer them:
- Fiber from the building to the sign. It carries past the 100 m copper limit, and being a dielectric it will not walk a surge from a struck sign back into your network gear.
- Direct-burial rated copper in conduit with isolation at both ends, for shorter runs.
- Cellular modem in the cabinet, which is honest but a compromise: a recurring cost, and if the modem dies your sign becomes unreachable until someone opens the door.
Whatever goes in, we leave a spare pull string. It costs nothing now and saves a trench later.
Surge
A sign is the tallest metal object on a flat Gulf Coast parking lot. It wants a proper ground plus surge protection on both the power feed and the data path. We protect the low-voltage side; the electrician handles the service side. Skipping it is why some signs go dark every storm season.
Nits, photocells, and the complaint from across the road
Outdoor LED cabinets are built to fight direct sun – daytime output in the thousands of nits, many times an indoor television. Run that at 11 p.m. and you have lit up somebody’s front window.
The fix is not somebody remembering to turn it down. It is a photocell feeding a dimming curve plus a scheduled overnight level. We set the curve at commissioning, then come back after dark and look at it from the road and from the nearest house. Where commercial frontage backs onto neighbourhoods, that ten-minute check prevents an unpleasant phone call.
If your sign will ever appear in video – a school stream, a news crew – the cabinet needs a high refresh rate or it will band and flicker on camera. That is a purchasing decision, not something we can fix afterwards, so raise it before you order.
How to tell whether you need a contractor for this
Honest answer: a small unit that plugs into an existing outlet, sits indoors behind glass and is run from a laptop is a do-it-yourself job. Most of what people call a digital sign is not.
Bring in a contractor when any of these are true:
- Anything leaves the building envelope – outdoor rating, sealing and cabinet drainage stop being optional.
- A new circuit, a disconnect, or a trench is involved.
- It goes above head height, where a failed anchor drops it onto a sidewalk.
- It has to be reachable from off-site for content changes.
- A lease, deed restriction or county requirement puts conditions on it.
What changes the number on the estimate
We never quote over the phone and we never give a figure before seeing the site. These are the variables that actually move it:
- Distance from building to sign, and whether conduit already exists. An empty sleeve under the parking lot is the biggest single saving on this kind of job.
- Whether we are trenching, boring or reusing a path. Crossing a driveway is very different from crossing grass.
- Copper versus fiber, which the run length and the risk picture decide, not preference.
- Mounting substrate – solid masonry, veneer over a void or a steel canopy each need different hardware and time.
- Access equipment. Above about twelve feet needs a lift, and a lift needs level ground to sit on.
- Control setup, from one scheduled loop to a multi-zone layout with live feeds.
The estimate comes back itemized, so you can drop anything you do not want.
The five mistakes we get called out to fix
- No spare conduit capacity. One cable pulled tight through a full pipe. Any future change means a new trench.
- Data and line voltage in one raceway. Induced noise, intermittent faults nobody can reproduce.
- Unsealed cabinet penetrations. Gulf Coast humidity finds every open grommet, and condensation inside an LED cabinet kills it slowly.
- Brightness left at factory default. Looks great at noon, becomes a neighbourhood complaint at ten.
- Nobody documented the network. No IP, no credentials, no record of the port. Six months later the sign is stuck on last season’s message and nobody can log in. We hand over a written record at closeout.
What the EVOTECH visit looks like, step by step
- Site walk first. Measure the run, confirm the sightline at driving height, verify the mounting surface, locate the nearest sensible network point.
- Coordination. Where a sign contractor and electrician are involved we agree the sequence in writing – conduit goes in before anything is poured or paved, or the cost doubles.
- Pathway. Conduit, pull string and cable, with service loops so the cabinet can be pulled forward without strain on the terminations.
- Termination and protection. Media conversion where needed, surge devices and labels at both ends.
- Commissioning. Brightness curve, day and night schedule, test content, remote access proven from a phone off your network rather than from the parking lot.
- Handover. A walkthrough with whoever will actually change the messages, plus the written network record. We do not leave until that person has changed one themselves.

Frequently asked questions
Can you put a digital sign on my existing pole sign in Cypress?
Often, yes – swapping the lower cabinet for an LED module avoids a new foundation. The limits are structural and electrical, not electronic: the pole and framing must carry the added weight and wind load, and the existing feed must support the draw. That call belongs to a sign contractor and engineer. We survey the data path, control reach and surge protection either way.
Do I need a permit for a digital sign in unincorporated Harris County?
Most of 77429 has no municipal sign department, so the process runs through the county rather than a city, and a sign facing a state highway can bring TxDOT in as well. Requirements change and they are specific to your frontage and setback, so confirm with the authority having jurisdiction before anything is fabricated. We will not guess at it for you, and you should be suspicious of any contractor who does.
How far can the sign be from the building before the network stops reaching it?
Standard copper Ethernet runs out at about 100 metres – roughly 330 feet – end to end, including the patch cords. On deep lots along Telge or a church set well back from Jones Road you can pass that without realising it. Past that distance we run fiber with media conversion at each end, which also isolates your indoor network electrically from a metal structure standing alone in a storm.
Will the sign be readable in full Texas afternoon sun?
A true outdoor-rated cabinet will be, because it is built for that. A standard indoor television in a weather box will not – its output is nowhere near what direct sun demands, and it will also cook. If a display you are being offered does not have a published outdoor brightness rating and an operating temperature range, it is the wrong product for a parking lot in Cypress.
Can the sign be controlled from a phone?
Yes, if the control path is built for it. Most controllers offer a browser or app interface, but that only helps if the sign has a dependable route to the internet and someone documented the credentials. We prove remote control works from off-site before calling the job finished.
