Access Control Upgrades in Richmond, TX: What to Fix First
Richmond access systems run from a solar keypad on a ranch gate off FM 359 to card readers in a law office near the county buildings and fob readers at amenity centers in the newer subdivisions. What they share is a list of possible upgrades longer than any budget. This page puts that list in order. EVOTECH IT LLC serves Richmond from its Katy base; call to confirm scheduling for your address.
A five-rung ladder for Richmond access upgrades
When the budget covers only part of the wish list, work from the bottom rung up. Each rung is cheaper and more useful once the one beneath it is solid.
- Anything that fails unsafe. Doors that should release on a fire alarm or power loss and do not, maglocks whose motion sensor or manual release button no longer works, and exit paths that depend on electronics. Gate entrapment protection matters just as much, and that check belongs to your gate company.
- Credentials anyone can use. A subdivision code saved in delivery apps, a storage-yard code written on the keypad housing, 125 kHz fobs that can be copied at a hardware kiosk.
- Blind spots. No entry log, no door position monitoring, no camera watching the gate lane.
- Remote control. Can you add or remove a person without driving to the site? For acreage and outbuildings, this is where most of the value is.
- Convenience. Phone entry, schedules, holiday calendars and links to cameras and alarm panels.
Plenty of upgrade quotes start at rung five because that is the exciting part. We start at rung one.
Retiring the gate code everybody already knows
In the newer Richmond communities, and at storage lots and equipment yards along the highways, a single gate code spreads fast: couriers, former renters, contractors, rideshare notes, the neighbor’s teenager. Changing it every month only redistributes it.
What replaces it
- Individual codes per household or tenant on a keypad that stores many codes and logs each use, so one leaked code can be traced and removed without affecting anyone else.
- Resident credentials such as windshield tags, fobs or phones, which keep the resident lane moving and leave the keypad for visitors.
- Delivery windows, codes for carriers that only work during set daytime hours.
- A video call box so a guest calls the household instead of being handed a code.
- Software links for storage and yards. Gate systems that connect to a facility’s management software can suspend a tenant’s code automatically when the account is locked out.
Managing a gate or building with no internet on site
Many Richmond sites have no network at the point that needs control: a gate a quarter mile from the house, a church fellowship hall across the parking lot, a barn full of equipment, a fenced yard with no office. There are three practical ways to reach them.
Cellular
A gate controller or keypad with a built-in cellular modem lets you manage codes, read the log and open the gate from an app. It carries a recurring data or service plan, and it depends on signal at the exact spot the enclosure will sit. We measure that on site, because a reading taken on the porch means little at a steel enclosure 900 feet away; an external antenna often closes the gap.
Wireless bridge
A point-to-point radio link carries your office or home network to the gate. Much of Fort Bend County is flat, which helps line of sight, but tree lines along creeks and the Brazos bottomland can block it.
Cable
OSDP reader wiring can run roughly 4,000 feet on suitable cable, and fiber carries a network much farther. Buried conduit is the most reliable option and the most disruptive to install, and routes through low ground need to account for flooding.
How the upgrade differs across Richmond
| Where | Common upgrade | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Historic downtown and professional offices near the county buildings | Standalone keypads replaced with wireless locks linked to a gateway, keeping cable to a minimum | Brick, plaster, high ceilings and converted houses on pier-and-beam foundations |
| Newer communities such as Harvest Green, Veranda, Aliana and Long Meadow Farms, plus established Pecan Grove | Resident app entry, guest passes, cameras at amenity entrances, HOA management roles | Board approvals, management-company access, residents moving in and out |
| Commercial strips along the Grand Parkway, US 59/I-69 and 90A | Moving medical, dental and retail suites from keypads to a networked system | Landlord approval and storefront door hardware |
| Acreage and ranch properties at the edges of town | Cellular gate control, shop and barn doors on the same app | Long distances, solar power, lightning, fire ants |
| Churches and private schools | Scheduled unlocks for services and a one-button lockdown | Many doors across several buildings, volunteer administrators |
Hardening the new equipment for Fort Bend conditions
- Surge protection on both ends of every outdoor data and power line, bonded to a proper ground. Open country around Richmond takes frequent lightning, and an unprotected run from a gate carries the surge straight into the controller indoors.
- Mounting height. After the Brazos flooding of 2016 and Harvey in 2017, controllers, power supplies and batteries in low buildings belong well above the floor, not on it.
- Fire ants. They nest inside keypads, junction boxes and gate controller enclosures and can short the electronics. We use gasketed enclosures, sealed cable entries and look for colonies at every visit.
- Recalculated battery standby. New video, cellular and PoE devices add load that the original backup was never sized for.

What happens when EVOTECH comes out to Richmond
- A scoping call. We talk through the site and confirm a date that works from our Katy base.
- On-site survey. We measure distances, test cellular signal at the actual gate location, open enclosures to check for water and ants, photograph the controller, and check any solar panel and battery.
- A quote in ladder order. Itemized so you can fund rung one now and later rungs when ready.
- Installation and testing of every credential type: codes, tags, fobs and phones, plus fire release and exit on every electrified door.
- Remote-management training, so you can add and remove people from your phone without calling anyone.
What drives the cost of a Richmond upgrade
- Distance to gates and outbuildings, and whether the path means trenching, boring or a wireless link.
- Cellular service plans for remote gates, which are recurring.
- Solar panel and battery re-sizing when powered devices are added.
- The number of households, tenants or staff to enroll.
- Video call box versus keypad, and vehicle tags versus fobs.
- HOA approvals, landlord approvals and presentations to a board.
Mistakes that fail in the field
- A cellular gate unit installed without a signal test inside its closed metal enclosure.
- A video intercom added to a solar gate on the original battery.
- Enclosures left unsealed, then filled with ants by the next summer.
- The old shared code kept active just in case, which cancels the upgrade.
- An HOA move-out checklist that was never updated to include removing phone credentials.
