Keyless Entry Repair in Cypress, TX 77433
When a keypad deadbolt starts rejecting codes, stalling halfway or vanishing from the app, the cause can usually be found at the door in a few minutes, and it is seldom the circuit board. This is the diagnostic path we follow on northwest Cypress homes, covering the front door, the garage keypad and the door in from the garage, plus an honest line between what is worth repairing and what is not.
Five checks to run at the door before anyone replaces anything
A surprising share of dead keyless locks are healthy locks fighting a door, a battery or a network. These checks take a few minutes and tell you, and us, which of those it is.
- Replace every battery at once, with the chemistry the manual names. A mix of old and new cells, or rechargeable AAs that sit near 1.2 volts, can light the keypad yet fail to deliver the current surge the motor needs to throw the bolt. Several manufacturers also warn against lithium AAs, because their flat discharge curve hides the low-battery warning until the lock simply stops.
- Open the door and operate the lock. If the bolt extends cleanly with the door open but struggles with it shut, the electronics are fine. The bolt is dragging on the strike.
- Try the mechanical key, if your model has one. A key that turns stiffly points to the cylinder or bolt mechanism rather than the motor or board.
- Write down exactly what the keypad does. Dark; lit but silent; a specific beep-and-flash pattern; or code accepted and the motor whirring without the bolt moving. Each of those leads somewhere different.
- Separate the lock from the app. If codes still work at the keypad but your phone shows the lock offline, the mechanism is sound and the fault sits in the hub, bridge, panel or Wi-Fi.
What northwest Cypress houses do to a keypad deadbolt
ZIP code 77433 holds two very different generations of housing, and they produce different failures. The earliest sections of Fairfield and Cypress Creek Lakes are well into their second decade, while Towne Lake and Bridgeland are still opening new streets.
Older sections: wear and a door that has moved
Keypad deadbolts fitted ten or more years ago often have rubber button membranes that have hardened, and the digits a family uses most stop registering reliably. Battery contacts pick up corrosion from humid Gulf air, especially where a door takes wind-driven rain. The larger issue is the house itself. The clay soils around Houston swell when saturated and shrink in drought, a slab moves slightly with them, and a frame that was square at closing can sit a sixteenth of an inch off years later. A motorized bolt has far less force than a hand on a thumbturn, so it notices that misalignment long before you do.
Newer sections: the lock is fine, the connection is not
On recent builds the hardware is young and faults are usually about what the lock is paired to: a builder-installed deadbolt enrolled on a security panel whose service was never activated, or a Wi-Fi lock that lost its network the day the owner replaced the internet provider’s router with a mesh system that has a different network name.
Exposure matters too
Plans that tuck the entry under a deep covered porch spare the keypad from the worst sun and rain. Doors that open onto a bare stoop, and garage keypads screwed to brick beside the garage door where sprinklers reach them, age much faster. A dark bronze or black escutcheon in direct afternoon sun gets hot enough by late July to shorten battery life and stiffen keypad seals.
Tracing the usual front door faults to their cause
The motor runs but the bolt stops short
This is the most common call. The lock senses the motor straining, decides it has hit an obstruction, reports a jam and often retracts again. The obstruction is almost always the strike: a pocket drilled too shallow for the full one-inch throw, or a strike plate that now sits a little high or low. The cure is carpentry, not a new lock. We deepen or shift the pocket, and if the whole slab has sagged, swapping a short top-hinge screw for one that bites the stud draws it back into line.
Codes that used to work are rejected
Look for three causes. Worn button contacts that read some presses and miss others; a code that was quietly erased when someone reset the lock while changing batteries; or a privacy or lockout mode switched on from the inside, which on several models disables every user code until it is turned off. Repeated wrong entries by children can also trigger a timed lockout that looks like a failure.
Keypad dark even with fresh batteries
The exterior keypad reaches the interior board through a thin ribbon or wire harness that passes through the cross bore. If a previous battery change unseated the connector, or the harness was routed where the bolt rubs it, the keypad goes dead or works intermittently. Green corrosion on the battery contacts produces the same symptom.
Batteries lasting weeks instead of months
Fast drain is a symptom rather than a fault. A motor stalling against a tight strike uses far more current than one moving freely. A Wi-Fi lock at the edge of coverage burns power searching for the network, and a lock that lost its hub keeps retrying. Auto-lock repeatedly firing at a door that has not fully closed does the same.
The thumbturn spins or the bolt will not retract
The tailpiece that links the exterior cylinder to the interior motor may have slipped out of its cam, or stripped. After any reinstall, the lock also needs to relearn which way the door swings; a lock calibrated for the wrong handing will drive the bolt the wrong direction first.
The garage keypad and the door in from the garage
In most 77433 homes the family comes and goes through the garage, which makes a failing garage keypad as disruptive as a broken front lock.
- Wireless opener keypads run on a small battery and talk to the opener by radio. If the opener was replaced, the old keypad may not speak the new unit’s security protocol, or was simply never paired again. On many popular openers the color of the learn button identifies the radio generation, so comparing it with the keypad’s compatibility list answers that quickly.
- Range problems usually trace to the opener’s antenna wire, which should hang straight down from the motor head rather than being tucked up against it.
- A keypad deadbolt on the house-to-garage door sits in an uninsulated space. Its batteries spend summer in real heat, which shortens their life and makes leakage more likely, so we check the battery compartment first on these.
When repair is the honest answer, and when it is not
| What we find | Usually repairable | Usually time to replace |
|---|---|---|
| Bolt dragging on the strike | Yes. Strike and hinge adjustment | Rarely |
| Pinched or chafed keypad harness | Often, when the maker sells the part | When the harness is molded into the exterior assembly |
| Worn keypad buttons | Sometimes, with a replacement exterior assembly | When the model is discontinued |
| Corroded battery contacts | Light surface corrosion cleans up | When corrosion has reached the circuit board |
| Motor grinds with the door wide open | Seldom | Usually |
| Lock cannot join any current app or hub | Not by repair | When the maker has ended app or cloud support |
If the lock is fine and the door is the problem, we will tell you so. Adjusting a strike costs you far less than a new deadbolt that would stall against the same strike.
How an EVOTECH repair visit runs
- We ask what the lock does and what changed just before it started: a storm, a battery swap, a new router, a new garage door opener.
- We measure battery voltage under load instead of assuming the cells are good.
- We run the bolt with the door open and closed to split mechanical faults from electrical ones.
- We remove the interior assembly and inspect tailpiece seating, harness routing and battery contacts.
- We correct the strike, hinges or weatherstrip as needed, then rerun the handing calibration.
- We restore the link to the hub, panel or Wi-Fi and confirm remote locking from your phone before we leave.
- We rebuild the user code list with you, removing stale codes and replacing any default programming code.
The work is done by EVOTECH IT LLC, licensed and insured for low-voltage systems, with more than 20 years in the Houston area and a 5.0-star customer rating.
What moves the price of a keyless entry repair
- How many entry points are involved: front door only, or the garage keypad and back door as well.
- Whether the cause is door alignment, which is labor, or a failed component, which adds parts.
- Whether replacement parts for your model are still sold.
- Network work at the door, such as adding a plug-in repeater or bridge.
- Re-enrolling a lock onto a security panel or hub.
Once you book an on-site estimate, the quote we write is itemized, with labor and parts listed apart, so you can see exactly what the repair involves.
Mistakes that make a repaired lock fail again
- Replacing batteries without fixing the bind that drained them, so the new set dies just as fast.
- Cranking the through-bolts, which squeezes the bolt housing out of alignment.
- Turning on auto-lock for a door with no door-position sensor, so the bolt fires into an open doorway and strikes the trim.
- Re-pairing a Wi-Fi lock on a combined 2.4 and 5 GHz network without confirming it landed on 2.4 GHz.
- Leaving no record of which codes exist, which leaves nobody sure who can still get in.
