Keyless Gate Entry · Katy 77494

Smart Lock Setup for Gates in Katy, TX 77494

On a lot of Katy properties the gate, not the front door, is where the pool tech, the lawn crew, the dog walker and half the deliveries actually come in — so the lock on it should decide who gets through, when, and keep a record. EVOTECH IT LLC sets up smart gate locks throughout Katy 77494, from side-yard gates in Cinco Ranch, Grand Lakes and Seven Meadows to courtyard, pool and driveway gates on larger lots and rear service gates at businesses along I-10 and the Grand Parkway.

Write the access plan before choosing a lock

Most people shop for a gate lock by looks and price, then discover it cannot do the one thing they bought it for. We reverse the order. The first conversation on a Katy install is about people: who needs to come through this gate, on which days, and what you want to know when they do.

A typical household list looks something like this: family members, a housekeeper every other week, a pool technician on a fixed weekday, a landscaping crew, a dog walker at midday, the occasional contractor, and visiting relatives. Each of those maps to a different feature:

  • Individual codes so one person’s access can be removed without re-keying everyone else.
  • Scheduled codes that only work during a set window, such as the pool visit.
  • One-time or expiring codes for a contractor or a guest weekend.
  • An activity log showing which code opened the gate and when.
  • Remote unlock and alerts for a delivery you are not home to receive.

An entry-level keypad lock may store codes but offer no schedules and no log unless it is paired with a hub. Knowing which features you need rules out the wrong hardware before anything is ordered. The codes and the history belong to your account; we set up administration so you control it, and we do not keep copies of your codes.

How the setup changes from one gate to the next

Side-yard wood gate on a production home

This is the gate between the house and the fence line on most homes in Cinco Ranch, Grand Lakes and the newer sections along FM 1463. The lock mounts on the latch stile with its keeper on the post. Double wood gates need one extra part people overlook: the inactive leaf must be pinned with a drop rod or cane bolt top and bottom, otherwise the active leaf’s bolt throws into a panel that simply swings away when pushed. A battery-powered lock with a bridge in the garage is the usual answer here.

Iron courtyard or pool gate

Ornamental iron and aluminum gates are built from narrow tube, and a conventional deadbolt will not fit a two-inch square frame. The options are a lock designed for gate tube, a lock box added to the frame, or a surface magnetic lock on an appropriate bracket. If the gate is part of a pool enclosure, the self-closing hinges and self-latching hardware stay in place and working; the smart lock controls who can open the gate, while the barrier hardware continues to close and latch it.

Motorized driveway gate on a larger lot

On estate-sized lots with an automatic swing or slide gate, the operator’s own drive holds the gate closed to a degree, but leaves can still be forced apart at the center. A magnetic or solenoid lock wired to the operator’s lock output fixes that, provided it is timed to release before the operator starts pulling. Smart control is typically added through the operator’s accessory inputs using an access controller or a listed smart relay, never by bypassing its safety sensors. Where the driveway serves as an emergency-vehicle access route, local fire requirements for emergency override apply, and we confirm them before changing the locking arrangement.

Commercial rear gate, dumpster enclosure or equipment yard

Offices, clinics and retail near I-10 and the Grand Parkway often have a fenced back-of-house gate used by staff and vendors. For a business, consumer app locks struggle with employee turnover, shared phones and multiple managers. We generally recommend a hardwired lock on a small access control panel over low-voltage cable, with per-employee credentials, schedules tied to business hours and an audit trail. Whether the lock releases or holds when power fails is decided by whether that gate is part of a required exit path.

Getting dependable signal across a Katy backyard

A smart gate lock is only as good as its link back to your router. Lot sizes in 77494 range from compact production lots to large estate parcels, and the obstacles vary: brick veneer, a detached garage or pool house, and mature tree canopy in the older sections of Cinco Ranch that has had decades to grow.

Wi-Fi locks and most lock bridges connect on the 2.4 GHz band only, which carries farther through walls than 5 GHz but is also the most crowded band in a dense subdivision. Our approach is to take readings right where the bolt engages, gate shut, at the time of day the lock will be used most. Depending on what we find, we use one of these:

  • A Bluetooth bridge placed on the nearest powered wall that faces the gate, often inside the garage.
  • An outdoor-rated access point on the eave or soffit, powered over Ethernet from the network closet.
  • A mesh node relocated or added so the gate sits inside its coverage rather than at the fringe.
  • Z-Wave or Zigbee repeaters that give a hub-based lock a stable path.

Hardening the install for Katy heat, storms and standing water

Katy sits on flat, slow-draining prairie, and parts of west Katy have seen serious standing water in major storms. That shapes how we install anything wired at a gate. Power supplies and controllers are mounted high and dry, never in a ground-level pull box that floods. Conduit entries are sealed, and every outdoor termination uses sealed, moisture-blocking connectors. Cable gets drip loops so water runs off before it reaches the hardware.

Heat is the other enemy. A keypad baking in direct late-day sun runs hot, which ages its membrane and battery. Where a gate faces west or south, we look at a shade hood or a mounting position on the shaded side of the post. We also fit the battery chemistry the lock’s manufacturer specifies, because some low-battery warnings are calibrated for alkaline cells and misreport with lithium.

Storm fronts can slam an unsecured gate hard enough to damage a bolt or crack a keeper. A gate stop, a closer, or both protect the lock from being used as the thing that stops the swing.

What we test before we call the job finished

  • The bolt or magnet engages fully with the gate pushed out and pulled in to both ends of its latch play.
  • Auto-lock fires only when the gate-position sensor confirms the gate is closed.
  • Remote unlock works from a phone on cellular data, not just from inside your Wi-Fi.
  • Every user code opens the gate, and a scheduled code is refused outside its window.
  • Arrival and low-battery notifications actually reach the phones that should receive them.
  • For wired locks, we pull power and confirm the gate behaves exactly as you chose: released or held.
  • You know where the mechanical override or free-egress device is, and at least two adults hold admin access.

Factors behind your itemized quote

We price after seeing the gate, and the free estimate breaks every line out. The items that make the biggest difference:

  • Gate material, and whether a metal gate needs a lock box or special bracket to accept the hardware.
  • Feature requirements: schedules, logs and multiple admins can call for a hub or an access control panel rather than a standalone lock.
  • How far a hardwired lock sits from its supply, and whether lawn or pavement separates them.
  • Network equipment required to reach the gate reliably.
  • For businesses, the number of employee credentials and whether the gate joins an existing access control system.
  • How many gates, and whether they should all be managed from one account.

Five problems we see on Katy gate lock installs

  1. One code for every vendor. When a crew changes, the only way to cut off access is to change the code for everyone.
  2. No drop rod on a double gate. The lock is locked, and the gate still opens with a firm push.
  3. A sprinkler head aimed at the lock. Daily irrigation spray finds every seam in a keypad housing within a season.
  4. Consumer app locks at a business. Access ends up tied to one manager’s personal phone, and removing a former employee becomes guesswork.
  5. No decision about power failure. Nobody chose whether the gate should open or stay locked in an outage, so the result is an accident of whichever hardware was cheapest.

Frequently asked questions

Can each service company have its own gate code?
Yes, on most smart locks. Giving the pool company, the lawn crew and the housekeeper separate codes means you can delete one without disturbing the others, and if the lock keeps a log you can see which code was used.
Can I see who opened the gate and when?
If the lock records activity and is connected through Wi-Fi, a bridge or a hub, the app shows each unlock with the code or user and a timestamp. Standalone keypad locks without a connection generally cannot show that history remotely.
Will a smart lock work on my double wood gate?
It can, as long as the inactive leaf is fixed in place with drop rods or cane bolts at top and bottom. Without that, the locked leaf simply pushes the other one open.
Can the gate lock work with Alexa, Google Home or SmartThings?
Many do, depending on the lock’s protocol and which hub you use. Voice assistants typically require a spoken PIN before they will unlock anything, which is a sensible safeguard to leave switched on.
We run a small business near the Grand Parkway. Should we use a consumer smart lock on the back gate?
For a single owner with no staff, perhaps. With employees, a hardwired lock on a small access control panel is usually the better fit: individual credentials, schedules, an audit trail and admin that does not live on one person’s phone.
Can you install a gate lock I already bought?
Usually, provided it is rated for outdoor exposure and physically suits the gate. If it does not, we will tell you before drilling rather than after.
